An initial consultation with one of our psychiatrists is available in French, English or Spanish to individuals 14 years of age and older. We also offer a variety of psychotherapies including short-term individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapies, couple and family psychotherapies. Services are covered by Medicare (RAMQ) or an equivalent provincial or private insurance. All services are strictly confidential.
Women:
Women share unique social, economic and health concerns that impact daily life. Whether questioning your sexual orientation, wondering how your sexuality will affect your life, or wanting to gain a deeper understanding of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, MUSIC can offer a safe space to explore these issues. Female staff members are available at your request for the initial consultation as well as for individual, couple and family psychotherapies. There is also a women’s interpersonal psychotherapy group run by two female therapists.
Men:
Men with sexual orientation issues and those that identify as gay or bisexual often have difficulty finding places where they can talk comfortably and without fear of judgment. MUSIC provides a safe environment where no assumptions are made about the client’s sexual orientation and diversity is respected. Depending on your preference, male or female staff members are available for the initial consultation as well as individual, couple and family psychotherapies. There is also a men’s interpersonal psychotherapy group.
Adolescents:
Teenagers who are questioning their sexual orientation often feel too shy to talk about it with adults that they know. There are many healthy expressions of sexuality and MUSIC provides a safe environment where you can just be yourself and talk to someone who is open and knowledgeable. You can ask to meet with a man or a woman on our team, depending on your preference. Kids and teens under the age of 14 need to have the consent of their parent or guardian, but you can make your own appointments as soon as you turn 14.
Couples & families:
We offer couple and family therapy to two broad groups. The first group is where a member of the family, adult or child, is openly questioning their sexual orientation or disclosing a change in their sexual orientation status. This often creates tension and distress with the people who love them most. MUSIC provides a comfortable environment where the couple or family can address these issues together with a trained therapist.
The second group is where LGBT couples, parents, or children run into couple or family difficulties of any kind and would prefer to work on these issues with a knowledgeable therapist in a safe environment.
Individuals from other cultures:
There are many healthy expressions of human sexuality. People from other cultures can sometimes feel that their sexuality doesn’t fit the Canadian constructs of gay, straight or bisexual. Additionally, they can also feel that their current sexuality is at odds with their culture of origin. Since MUSIC opened in 1999, we have been able to help clients from every continent and many diverse cultures and religious faiths. MUSIC provides a safe environment where no assumptions are made about the client’s sexual orientation and where religious and cultural diversity is respected.
The transgender and transsexual communities:
At this time, it is the Human Sexuality Unit of the MUHC (514.934.8010) that offers services for those individuals who are transitioning. However, MUSIC does offer services for people who are questioning their gender identity as well as those who know they are transgender or transsexual but feel unhappy about it or the quality of their interpersonal relationships.
