Contract Law for Non-Lawyers: Fundamentals of The World of Agreements and Obligations

There are many professionals who, each day, must make decisions on behalf of their organizations; contractually obligating those organizations. Many of these transactions take place without a full appreciation or understanding of the nature and scope of the obligations. Moreover, very often the agreements are either ill-conceived and/or poorly drafted, thereby resulting in confusion and difficulty in fulfilling the mutual obligations. This workshop is designed to demystify contract law and facilitate the conception and drafting contracts.

Description

This workshop will provide an overview of contract law. Through an intellectually stimulating and fun series of exercises, the subject of contract law will be demystified and explained in simple language. Participants will learn some of the “nuts and bolts” of the law and walk through the process of reasoning through different contractual scenarios. It is designed to enhance the professional development of individuals who work with and/or concern themselves with contracts on a regular basis.

This workshop is designed for non-legal professionals who need to deal with contracts in their daily business or personal environments. It is relevant to contract advisors, general managers, business partners, marketing managers, business development managers, and the like. This workshop is a good investment for individuals who are looking to develop small businesses and are likely to enter into contractual obligations with others.

At the end of this workshop the participants will be able to apply Appreciative Inquiry principles to:

  • Understand the legal definition of a contract;
  • Clarify how and when a contract is formed;
  • Enhance each participant’s critical thinking skills with regard to the ingredients of a good contract;

Facilitator

Jay A. Hewlin, Esq., J.D.

Jay A. Hewlin is an attorney and consultant specializing in managerial effectiveness, leadership and employment law. Jay is a lecturer at McGill Faculty of Management, where he teaches Negotiations and Conflict Management. In addition to his legal experience, Jay is a seasoned manager and entrepreneur, having worked as an executive in private industry and managed his own corporation in New York. He has extensive experience in negotiating and drafting contracts. Jay received his Juris Doctorate from Columbia University School of Law and BA in Music from Boston University. He has published in The Corporate Counsellor, Columbia Law Review and Ovation Magazine. As well Jay authored a book titled: The First Fifteen Minutes (For Those Dating With Marriage in Mind).


Cancellation Policy

All cancellation & substitution requests must be made in writing. The following Cancellation Policy applies:

Up to 14 days prior to the start date: Full refund
7 days prior to the start date: Refund minus $100 Cancellation fee
Within 7 days of the start date: No Refund, however suitable participation substitution will be permitted

If no notice is given prior to the start of the event(s) and you fail to attend, you will be liable for the full course fee.

McGill SCS reserves the right to cancel an event up to 5 days prior to its start.
