SCS Lab Area at 688 Sherbrooke

Description and booking procedure

The School of Continuing Studies lab area located on the 12th floor of 688 Sherbrooke St. W. provides a blend of traditional computer labs, active learning rooms and informal learning spaces. The purpose of these facilities is to be used for teaching and Learning.

This overview gives a description of each rooms and describes the procedures for reserving them. 

Schedule

All labs are open on weekdays from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. They are closed on Sunday. Lab monitors are available for support during lab hours.

Connectivity and Software

All computers are connected to the Internet. Wi-Fi is available in the entire lab area. To see the list of software applications installed in each lab, go to this page.

Reservation Procedure

To reserve a lab, verify room availability on the Lab Schedule and send a request by email to instructors [dot] conted [at] mcgill [dot] ca. Please note that some rooms are assigned in priority to specific programs and may not be available for booking until the regular term schedule is finalized.

Booking for activities other than teaching and learning can only be accommodated a day in advance.

Room 1265 – Active Learning Classroom

This room offers an environment that promotes active learning strategies and collaboration between learners. It features four oval tables and white boards around the room.

Capacity: 24 + instructor

Equipment
Each table is connected to a dedicated projector with a hook-up for laptop. The room is also equipped with a digital document camera, an interactive whiteboard, as well as a video camera, speakers and microphone for web conferencing.

Reservation
Reservation required, available in one-hour slots to instructors and academic coordinators of all programs.

Room 1271 – Drop-in Computer Lab

For students who need a computer to work on individually at any time during the day. For class activities in the evening.

Capacity: 25

Equipment
Individual workstations. For teaching, the instructor’s PC is connected to an interactive whiteboard and projector. 

Reservation
No reservation during the day (9:00 am to 5:30 pm). Students must provide a valid McGill ID card for entering the room. Reservation required, available in one-hour slots to instructors and academic coordinators of all programs for evening courses.

Room 1273–1276 – Breakout Rooms

This space consists of four small rooms that can each accommodate 6 students. These rooms are meant to be used for breakout sessions involving small group work.

Capacity: 24 (4x6) + instructor

Equipment
For each room, one table with chairs, one computer with wall monitor as well as webcam and microphone for web conferencing. Monitor hook-up for one laptop also available.

Reservation
The four rooms must be reserved as a single block
, for a minimum period of one hour. Reservation available in one-hour slots to instructors and academic coordinators of all programs.

Room 1279 – Active Learning Lab

This room offers an environment that promotes active learning strategies and collaboration between learners. It is equipped with four oval tables with laptops and white boards around the room.

Capacity: 24 + instructor

Equipment
Each table is connected to a dedicated projector and features six configured laptops. A hook-up for the projector is available on each table. The room is also equipped with a digital document camera, an interactive whiteboard, as well as a video camera, speakers and microphone for web conferencing. Headsets with microphones are available for activities involving listening and speaking.

Reservation
This room is dedicated in priority to Language learning activities. Reservation available in one-hour slots to instructors and academic coordinators.

Room 1285 – Active Learning Lab

The room is also equipped with a digital document camera, an interactive whiteboard, as well as a video camera, speakers and microphone for web conferencing. Headsets with microphones are available in one-hour slots for activities involving listening and speaking.

Reservation available to instructors and academic coordinators of all programs.

Room 1291 – Instructor Lab

This room is for instructors who require a quiet space equipped with computers to prepare their course material.

Capacity: 5 instructors

Equipment
Five workstations with headsets and microphones.

Reservation
Drop-in, no reservation. Valid McGill ID Card required for entering the room.

Room 1295 – Computer Lab

This traditional computer lab is configured with individual booths. It should be used for activities that require privacy and isolation of students such as individual language exercises, testing and exams.

Capacity: 26 + instructor

Equipment
Individual booths with workstation, headset and microphone. The instructor’s workstation is connected to an interactive whiteboard, projector and speaker.

Reservation
This room is dedicated in priority to language learning activities. Reservation available in one-hour slots to instructors and academic coordinators.

Room 1299 – Computer Lab

This traditional computer lab is configured with individual booths. It should be used for activities that require privacy and isolation of students such as individual language exercises, testing and exams.

Capacity: 27 + instructor

Equipment
Individual booths with workstation, headset and microphone. The instructor’s workstation is connected to an interactive whiteboard, projector and speaker.

This room is dedicated in priority to language learning activities. Reservation available in one-hour slots to instructors and academic coordinators.

Room 1217 and 1218 – Informal Learning Spaces

These two small rooms can accommodate up to five people. They are dedicated primarily to activities such as instructor/student office-hour meetings, one-on-one coaching, instructor training and students’ group work.

Capacity: 5

Equipment
For each room, one table with chairs, a wall monitor and monitor hook-up for laptop.

Reservation
Each room can be reserved by instructors. Use by students is on a drop-in basis only, provided the room is available. Students much check availability with the lab monitor before entering the room. Reservation for activities other than teaching and learning can be accommodated a day in advance only.
