Biography

Charles has 40 years of professional marketing and sales experience with a wide range of corporations, as well as 33 years of teaching experience with the McGill School of Continuing Studies, the McGill Faculty of Management, and at public and private colleges.

After earning a McGill MBA in marketing in 1976, Charles worked in the marketing departments of McDonald Tobacco, Gillette, Canadelle and Bestar. He also worked on behalf of family-owned companies in the health, beauty aids and fragrance industries, marketing consumer goods to leading North American retailers. Charles created fragrance brands which became best sellers in their category in Wal-Mart's U.S. stores. He founded and ran his own successful fragrance company for seven years before selling it to pursue consulting opportunities in the wall decor industry, including supplying art to ViaRail.

Charles started teaching marketing at McGill in 1983. His current research interests lie in neuromarketing and the philosophy of active learning. His classroom de-emphasizes the traditional lecture format and puts students at the center of the learning experience.
