Biography

Zave Kaufman holds a B.Sc. from Concordia University, a L.L.B. from the Université de Sherbrooke, and he is a member of the Quebec Bar. He presently works as a trade and customs lawyer with Gottlieb and Associates in Montreal.

With 20 years of experience working as both legal counsel and consultant at two leading customs brokerage and logistics service providers, Zave has acquired a unique understanding of the daily challenges faced when dealing with the ever-changing regulatory requirements of both Canadian and US Customs authorities.

Kaufman counsels companies of all sizes, from small and mid-size businesses to multinational corporations in mitigating trade-related risk on customs compliance issues such as tariff classification, value for duty, country of origin, export controls, marking, tariff treatment, record keeping and voluntary disclosure.

Zave also advises importers and exporters in regards to packaging and labeling issues, SIMA investigations and pleadings, GST applications including guidance for non-resident importers, quota issues, duty deferral, free trade agreements, tariff relief requests, AMPS appeals, hazardous goods restrictions, and qualifying companies under both the C-TPAT and PIP security regimes

His practice includes client representations before government officials and pleadings before both the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) and the Federal Court of Canada.

Zave has worked with clients in providing in-house, tailor-made customs training seminars as well as individualized compliance programs and manuals.

Zave has also taught courses on trade-related subjects at the college and university levels in Canada and China.
