A broad introduction to business based on the functional areas: accounting, finance, human resources management, industrial relations, marketing, production, and general management. Basic components of effective health and safety policies, programs and current legislation (CSST, WHMIS, safety committees) focusing on proactive management to ensure employees have clearly defined accountabilities for accident prevention: hazardous materials, loss prevention, workers' compensation claims, employee assistance plans, work life quality, preventative health issues, and ergonomic standards.

Compensation policies and practices, consistent with motivational theories, are examined. Topics include: design and evaluation of job evaluation systems, salary structures, and performance-based pay; compensation of special employee groups; and current pay equity laws. Projects and simulations provide "hands-on" experience in the use of compensation techniques.
