Dean's Message

I extend a warm welcome to our new members—and an equally warm “welcome back” to returning members. You are in for many learning treats during the 2011-2012 season, as you will soon find out by reading through the offerings described in this calendar.

On May 1, the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement became the McGill Community for Lifelong Learning (MCLL). Your community is an ever-evolving and dynamic area within the McGill School of Continuing Studies (SCS) and plays an important role in extending opportunities for learning and friendship to older adults who are finally able to take some time for themselves. The volunteer and peer-based model is exemplary and bespeaks the generosity and openness of our members.

As a multidisciplinary academic unit with the primary goal of meeting the professional, cultural and personal learning needs of a rapidly-changing society, the McGill School for Continuing Studies is a natural home for the McGill Community for Lifelong Learning. The contributions made by MCLL members to the broader SCS efforts through, for example, conversation partners with English Second Language learners, greeters at SCS events and donors to scholarship and bursary programs for highly-motivated SCS learners in financial need, are very much appreciated—and make a significant difference.

Thank you for sharing your light and life with all of us. And happy learning!

Dr. Judith Potter
Dean of Continuing Education, McGill University
