McGill University’s program, Certificate of Proficiency in English - Language and Culture, also known as Intensive English - Language and Culture (IELC) offers something special: EACH SEMESTER (fall, winter and summer) contains 2 six-week sessions. This means you can do two levels (each one six weeks long) of our program during one academic semester, with a week break between them.
McGill University's Intensive English Language and Culture (IELC) program
- serves as a gateway to academic studies at McGill University;
- offers you an exceptional learning experience including frequent contact with native speakers.
We invite you to join the thousands of students from over sixty countries who have lived the IELC experience.
Program Description
The Intensive English Program - Language and Culture (IELC) is an 8 – level program which leads to the McGill Certificate of Proficiency. It is designed to offer you the pedagogical support you need to reach your goals of working, studying, and living in English.
Each course is six weeks long but takes place within a longer academic semester of thirteen weeks (fall, winter and summer), so you can do two levels in one semester with a week break between!
| Elementary Module: | Elementary 1
(PLEASE NOTE: Students entering this level should already have had some minimal exposure to basic English.)
Elementary 2 |
| Intermediate Module: | Intermediate 1 Intermediate 2 Intermediate 3 |
| Bridge: | Bridge (a unique level which provides additional strengthening and expansion of your linguistic base before you enter the Advanced Module) |
| Advanced Module: | Advanced A Advanced B |
Successful completion of the two Advanced levels with a grade of 65% (B-) or higher qualifies you for the McGill Certificate of Proficiency in English - Language and Culture. While you must succeed in both courses to attain the Certificate, you can take them in any order.
Progress at each level increases your confidence and comfort in using English. At the Certificate level, students can handle complex exchanges in English, produce written texts of general academic and professional quality and approach listening and reading tasks with native-speaker like competence.
Have questions? Our Department holds frequent information sessions where you can learn more about our IELC program and get the answers to any questions you might have. Check our website for dates and be sure to register well ahead of time as they fill up quickly.
