Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Certificate Program in Translation:
- A considerable degree of fluency and correctness in English, French and/or Spanish, with emphasis on the written language is required.
- Students must pass an Entrance Examination.
- Students must hold a CEGEP diploma (D.C.S. or equivalent).
- Students 21 years of age and over who do not have the academic background for admission may be admitted as mature students.
- Students between 18 and 21 years of age who do not have a CEGEP diploma or equivalent may be accepted into a qualifying program to be determined by the Department. Formal admission to the Certificate Program will normally follow upon satisfactory completion of the Qualifying Program.
Admission Procedures
Students wishing to follow the Certificate in Translation program can apply at http://www.mcgill.ca/conted/applyregister/. Along with your application you will need to provide the following documents:
- An unofficial transcript (if applicable). Arrangements should be made to forward an official transcript confirming D.E.C. and/or degree completion. This also applies to McGill graduates.
- Proof of age. Students 21 years of age and over who do not have the academic background for admission may be admitted as mature students.
- Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident status.
- Proof of residency in Quebec: In order to comply with auditing and funding regulations of the Quebec Ministry of Education, students who claim to be residents of Quebec must provide documentary proof in support of their claim.
- The ministry of Education of Quebec (MEQ) requires that all students attending a Quebec university must have a permanent code.

The application fee is $65.00 CAD (non-refundable). This fee includes application for evaluation of transcripts of previous education for students requesting advanced standing in a program. It also includes the Entrance Examination fee.
Application deadlines are:
Spring: February 1st
Fall: June 1st
Winter: October 1st
Students who do not register within one year of the date of acceptance will be required to reapply.
Residency Requirements and Advanced Standing
Students are required to complete at least 70% of the total program requirements at McGill University (7 out of 10 courses).
Advanced standing of up to 9 credits (3 courses) may be awarded for equivalent courses that were successfully completed at the university level, within the last five years.
Students are permitted to be away from the program for no more than one academic year without reapplying.
Time Limits
The program must normally be completed within four years of admission. Students exceeding the time limit may request an extension, in writing, which may be granted under special circumstances, with the approval of the Director.
Academic Standing Requirements
Students are required to obtain a minimum grade of B- in each course in the program.
Students who have more than one unsatisfactory grade in the program will be required to withdraw from the program.
In order to be eligible for the certificate, students must obtain a minimum average of 70% in the program (to be calculated over all courses).
Second Certificate
Students having completed the Certificate in Translation and wishing to complete a second certificate in another language of specialization, will be granted 6 to 9 credits advanced standing (depending on the option) and will be required to complete:
9 credits — in the second option
12 to 15 credits — electives in the program
Special Students
Special Students may take courses in the program provided they have passed the Entrance Examination. The number of courses a Special Student may take is limited. Students are encouraged to apply to the program before completing four (4) courses. The School of Continuing Studies has no obligation to recognize credits earned by Special Students towards completion of a Certificate Program.
Special Students, although not formally admitted to the program, are expected to demonstrate seriousness of academic purpose. Special Students are permitted to repeat the same course only once.
Special Students taking courses in the Certificate in Translation program will be governed by the same Academic Standing Requirements expected of students enrolled in the program.
