Montreal aqueduct repairs now in the final phase
The City of Montreal is now in the final phase of a major infrastructure project that continues to significantly affect traffic and parking in the area of McGill University, the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Allan Memorial Institute and the Montreal Neurological Institute.
The project, part of a multi-year effort to improve the City’s aging and leaky water distribution network, is to replace key water mains that are more than 100 years old in some cases. The work will result in restrictions on parking and traffic circulation in the areas surrounding the McTavish Reservoir, bordered by Pine Ave, Dr. Penfield Ave. and McTavish St.
Construction in three phases
The work is scheduled to be executed in three phases between October 2012 and August 2013.
- Phase I: (Initiated October 9 and completed in December 2012)
- Phase II: (January – April 2013)
Phase III: (April 29 – September 2013): The first portion of this phase is now complete and Phase IIIB was initiated as of July 11. Access to all buildings on Pine Street will be maintained during this phase. The City will notify McGill in advance of any restrictions of access, should this be required.
Eastbound circulation on Pine Ave. between Doctor Penfield and Durocher St. will be closed for the duration of these works. In addition, various other changes will be implemented, as below and attached:
Westbound circulation will be variously restricted, as well as on the upper sections of University, Aylmer, and Durocher Streets. Doctor Penfield will be open for local circulation in one direction, only. Click on the map above for further details [français, .pdf].
Please be advised that, as with all major construction projects, this information is subject to change. McGill has no control over the progress of this project, but will do its best to inform you of any updates the City provides us.
While we are working closely with the City of Montreal to ensure disruptions are kept to a minimum, there will doubtless be inconveniences over the next several months.
