Macdonald Engineering / Macdonald Stewart Roofs

Macdonald Engineering Building Macdonald Stewart Building
Summary: Two simultaneous projects to replace the slate and copper roofs of the Macdonald Engineering
and the Macdonald Stewart buildings.
Project number: 08-29-096 & 08-29-097
Project cost: $3.3M & $3.7M
Project manager: Amanda Ceccarelli
Completion date: Summer 2013
Project overview: McGill is replacing the historic slate and copper roofs on bothe Macdonald Engineering Building and the adjacent Macdonald Stewart Library. This reconstruction work will address the ongoing issues of infiltration and the risk of falling slate, as well as the deterioration of the stone chimneys. The new roofs will be ventilated to discourage the formation of icicles.
Sustainability: Slate and copper have been used, as was the case for the original buildings. This is important for historical and practical reasons; these materials are more durable and low maintenance than modern building materials. The new roofs are expected to last at least another hundred years.
In the case of the Macdonald Stewart building a portion of the copper has been conserved and reused to create a visual screen to hide the mechanical equipment on the roof of the Frank Dawson Adams building.
New cupola, now installed on the roof of Macdonald Stewart.
