Dental care for all

Thirty per cent of Quebecers either have no dental coverage or don't avail themselves of services to which they have a right. McGill’s Faculty of Dentistry, in collaboration with community organizations, works to reduce these numbers by reaching out to the disadvantaged, offering free dental services.

For more than 13 years, the McGill Mobile Dental Clinic has travelled to communities across the Montreal region, providing basic dental care to those in need.  In February, 2011, the Faculty took it a step further, joining forces with Welcome Hall Mission to add a permanent home base, the Jim Lund Dental Clinic, to the program. Low-income families, homeless men and women and new immigrants enrolled in programs at the Mission now have access to services that might have otherwise been out of reach.

The rewards of the program are many, and are far from one sided. Over the years the Dental Outreach program has become an essential element of the students’ training, offering them the opportunity to gain front-line experience while working with a variety of clients.
