Le thème du programme de recherche de Pierre Gagnon est le delirium, ou état confusionnel aigu, un problème de première importance en médecine palliative. Il s'agit d'une complication lourde de conséquences qui survient chez un pourcentage élevé de patients en phase avancée de cancer. Le delirium a un impact majeur sur la qualité de vie des patients et des familles de même que sur le pronostic. Après avoir complété une étude-pilote avec Dr.Pierre Allard pour obtenir les données de base sur l'épidémiologie clinique du delirium en phase avancée de cancer (subventionnée par l'INCC), ils ont obtenu une subvention de l'INCC de 5 ans pour un essai préventif multicentrique, également subventionné par l'INCC. Une étudiante à la maîtrise a collaboré au projet pilote dont une partie fait l'objet de son mémoire. En plus de ce protocole, le Dr.Gagnon travaille également à l'adaptation et à la validation d'instruments de dépistage et de diagnostic pour le delirium mieux adaptés à la médecine palliative. Un étudiant gradué à la maîtrise en médecine expérimentale a produit son mémoire et obtenu sa maîtrise sur ce sujet. Dans les prochaines années, le programme de recherche de Gagnon comprendra des essais randomisés de différentes approches psycho-pharmacologiques pour prévenir et traiter le delirium et une intervention psycho-éducationnelle pour les proches à domicile au sujet du delirium en phase avancée de cancer. Un étudiant au doctorat en pharmacie cible sa thèse sur le prévention pharmacologique du delirium alors qu'une résidente en soins palliatifs réalise son projet de recherche sur le traitement du delirium. Les autres sujets de recherche possibles avec le Docteur Gagnon incluent également le traitement des symptômes psychiatriques, l'usage des psychotropes ainsi que les psychothérapies de groupes et individuelles en soins palliatifs.
