Award-winning unit will add 10 new beds this year

 

Stroke is the third-leading cause of death in Canada. Each year, some 14,000 Canadians die as a result of a stroke.

Discovery could be key to treating brain and spinal cord injury

Raising awareness about stroke

 

Every ten minutes, someone in Canada suffers a stroke. Strokes kill 14,000 Canadians each year, making stroke the third leading cause of death in this country.

The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) hopes to increase public awareness about the dangers of stroke by marking Stroke Month. People who learn about the causes of stroke can take measures to reduce their chances of having a stroke.

Time is brain: for every minute a stroke is left untreated, 2 million brain cells are destroyed. The sooner patients are treated, the higher the chances of survival with fewer disabilities.  Patients with acute strokes and transient ischemic attack (TIA) are assessed and treated at the right place, the right time and by the right professionals thanks to ultra-specialized stroke centres at the Montreal General Hospital  and The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital.
