We are pleased to announce that the negotiation between McGill and MUNACA has now come to an end, after two years of discussions.

The appointment of an arbitrator by the Ministry of Labour allowed the parties to agree on more topics during the recent months of July and August, until she rendered a decision on the last item in dispute on September 9, 2022.

HR update to managers – MUNACA negotiations

As we enter the annual compensation review period, the following information is provided to managers and supervisors to keep them abreast and help them discuss or answer questions from staff pertaining to the ongoing negotiations with MUNACA.

McGill and MUNACA leadership began negotiations on a new collective agreement in Fall 2020. Since then, the parties have met regularly, despite challenges associated with the pandemic, and have come to agreement on most of the non-monetary elements.

Negotiations between MUNACA and McGill began in the fall of 2020 and the parties have met regularly since then. Parties have been able to discuss and come to agreement on almost all the non-monetary elements within the collective agreement, including: Definitions, Discrimination and Harassment, Grievance and Disagreement Procedure, Disciplinary Measures, Probationary Period, Unpaid Leave of Absence, Labour Relations Committee, Rest Periods, Overtime, and Technological Change.

On September 10, 2020, the University met with MUNACA union representatives to begin negotiating the first collective agreement of their new bargaining unit accredited by the Tribunal Administratif du Travail on August 2, 2019. The parties agreed to meet on a weekly basis in order to ensure the progression of the negotiation. As per standard practice, a negotiating protocol outlining the framework for the negotiation meetings and their conduct was agreed on by the parties during that session.

On Wednesday, October 3, Quebec's Tribunal administratif du travail -- the government body that oversees unionization -- notified McGill that MUNACA has filed six petitions to unionize employee groups.

The University will adhere to all applicable laws throughout this process, and in keeping with the Labour Code we have posted the attached document (on the right-hand side of this page), containing the petitions filed and associated hearing notices. We will communicate further as we learn more.

MUNACA has opted to join the Family Days pilot project, launched in January 2018. As a result, its members are now eligible for Family Days as part of a 17-month pilot project. Like M and Excluded staff, they may now use up to three of their nine paid sick days to care for their sick children, spouses, parents, grandparents or siblings – even when the employees themselves are not ill.
