Thanks to the generosity of Don Lewtas (BCom’75), students will soon benefit from the Lewtas Experiential Learning Office.

In collaboration with Desautels Career Management, the new Office will help students connect with companies and campus departments that can provide on-the-job experience in their respective fields of study.

It will also serve as a main point of contact between faculty instructors and business leaders who are looking to recruit student talent.

Professor Richard G. Donovan passed suddenly on August 3, 2019, but the legacy he left behind continues to this day. Through generous donor support, the $50,000 Richard G. Donovan Prize in Case Excellence is awarded to graduating students who have excelled in case competitions in their time at McGill. Now, Desautels is raising funds to endow the prize in order to support students for generations to come.

Inspired by the academic talent he sees in his students, Professor Gregory Vit is committed to eliminating any financial barriers that might stand in the way of pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree. McGill alumnus Marc-André Isabelle (Dip.FMT, BEng. Bioresource) is a course lecturer in the Farm Management & Technology program. The Isabelle farm in Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, has evolved and expanded throughout the years, from dairy to strawberries to produce, and most recently launching FestiFleurs, a popular pick-your-own bouquet event.

After a career-ending injury left Gabriel Gervais, MBA’09, unable to continue playing professional soccer, his McGill MBA landed him a permanent role at Deloitte. Since 2009, he has leveraged his expertise to help companies improve their supply chain management and manufacturing operations. The former defender, who had his sights set on playing in the World Cup, still makes time to follow the sport and maintain friendships with former teammates.

Joanne Liu (MDCM’91, IMHL’14, DSc’16) brings decades of experience as a pediatric emergency room physician and former international president of Doctors Without Borders to McGill’s School of Population and Global Health. In her new role as a professor, she will focus on pandemic and health emergencies. Liu, who currently sits on the Independent Panel of Pandemic Preparedness and Response, was named one of the 100 most influential people on the planet by Time magazine in 2015.

After receiving substantial financial support to complete his BCom degree at Desautels, Pierre LeBrun (BCom’72) has been paying it forward for over five decades. From the time he joined RBC as summer student in 1965 to his retirement from a Senior VP position in 2000, he has steadfastly worked to give students the same opportunity he received. In 2019, LeBrun became the inaugural donor for the Desautels Dean’s Legacy Fund, which will allow him to support students even after his death.

This was the first edition of the ceremony to be held virtually, with the organizers and honourees truly personifying the values of the DMAA - resilience, pushing ahead and innovation.

A team of Desautels students and alumni has reached the semifinal round of impact200, McGill’s Bicentennial Sustainability Challenge for students and recent alumni. The winning team, which includes analytics BCom students, Master of Management in Analytics (MMA) students, Desautels alumni, and a software engineer student, created a platform that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance food security in Montreal. They will join 29 other teams for the semifinal round of the competition on March 16-18, 2021.

On January 11, McGill University Advancement (UA) took home seven awards from the annual Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District I Excellence Awards. UA faced stiff competition from counterparts at Ivy League schools and other top universities in Canada and the northeast U.S., but its quick, successful pivot to virtual programming during the pandemic made an impression.
