Volleyball Martlets get two all-stars and libero of the year

McGill volleyball player Daphnée-Maude André-Morin has been named libero of the year in the Quebec conference. She was honoured by the QUVL, along with teammates Kelsey Irwin of Vancouver, B.C., and Marcela Mansure of Brazil, who earned berths on the first and second all-star teams, respectively.

Martlets meet their Waterloo in Sherbrooke

Geneviève Plante, a freshman power-hitter from Montreal, racked up a game-high 21 kills to go along with 14 digs but it was not enough as Sherbrooke stunned visiting McGill for the second time in three days, Sunday, winning a five-set duel to sweep the Martlets in a see-saw battle at the Quebec university women's volleyball bronze medal series for a CIS wild-card berth.

Laval clips Martlets for third straight time

Marie-Christine Mondor, a senior from Mascouche, Que., amassed 16 kills as No.5-ranked Laval swept McGill 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22 in women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday, to clinch a first-place bye on the final day of the regular season.

Carabins continue to cruise past Martlet volleyballers

Marie-Sophie Nadeau racked up 18 kills, 11 digs and four blocks as 21 points as the Montreal Carabins defeated visiting McGill 3-1 in women's volleyball at the Centre CEPSUM, Friday. The set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-21 in a match that took exactly two hours to play.

Plante's defence keys Martlets offence in road win at Sherbrooke

Rookie power-hitter Genevieve Plante of Montreal registered 15 kills and 18 digs as visiting McGill rallied to defeat Sherbrooke 3-1, Saturday. After dropping the opening set 20-25, the Martlets roared back to sweep the next three 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21.

The Martlets and Redmen hockey teams are ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, while the men's swim team has remained ninth and the women's volleyball squad crept in for the first time this season, with a debut at No.10.

The schedule of McGill varsity sporting events to be webcast on SSN for the 2011 winter semester has been released. Including road games, the hockey Redmen lead the pack with eight games, followed by the basketball Martlets (6), basketball Redmen (6), hockey Martlets (5) and the volleyball Martlets (2).

The McGill women's volleyball team defeated Toronto 25-16, 22-25, 25-11 and 25-12 at the U of T Athletics Centre, Thursday, to finish with a 3-1 record at the National Invitational Tournament.

McGill varsity teams back in gear over the holdays

A number of McGill varsity sports teams will be in action over the holidays. The only local events will be in basketball, with the Redmen suiting up for the Classique des Citadins tournament at UQAM and the Martlets playing at the Concordia-Reebok Invitational tourney. Both hockey teams will be out of town, along with the volleyball, track and swim teams.
