Pelletier comes off bench to ignite stunning rally as volleyball team licks Laval women, qualifies for Nationals

Victoria Pelletier came off the bench to spark an unlikely rally and Marie-Christine Lapointe racked up 16 kills, three aces and five stuff blocks as McGill erased a 2-0 deficit in sets to upset No.7-ranked Laval 3-2 and qualify for a berth at the CIS national championship in Hamilton, Ont., March 2-4.

Martlets master momentum, leave Laval languishing, force playoff rubber match

When Sir Isaac Newton wrote his laws of motion in the 17th century, he understood the importance of momentum in science but he never could have imagined the impact that it would play in sports. Momentum played a hug role in the Quebec women's volleyball playoffs, Saturday, as McGill rallied after losing 25-23 to Laval in the opening set and roared back to win 3-1 at Love Competition Hall.

Volleyball Martlets stumble in playoff opener at Quebec City

QUEBEC CITY - Kaiva Mateus of Montreal West registered 16 kills, a pair of aces and four stuff blocks but it was not enough as McGill dropped Game 1 of the best-of-three Quebec women's volleyball semifinal series at the Centre PEPS, Friday. Laval defeated McGill 3-2 by set scores of 17-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-19 and 15-10 in a contest that took two hours and 27 minutes to complete.

Three members of the McGill University women's volleyball team have earned all-star conference status -- two of them winning major awards -- as the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec announced the league award winners Wednesday.

Mateus uncorks as Martlets conquer Carabins

Kaiva Mateus, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Montreal, uncorked 11 kills, three aces, three assisted blocks and an equal number of digs as McGill stunned the division-leading Université de Montreal Carabins 3-1 in women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday. The set scores were 25-24, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-19 in an intense match that lasted 110 minutes.

Volleyball women look good but stumble in Quebec City

Kaiva Mateus racked up a game-high 14 kills, to go along with an ace and two stuff blocks but it was not enough as the visiting McGill women's volleyball team suffered a 3-2 loss at Laval, Friday. The set scores for the Rouge et Or were 15-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 and 15-10 in a two-hour, 12-minute marathon played at the Centre PEPS.

Please note that the exhibition women's volleyball game scheduled to be played today in Ottawa between McGill and the Gee-Gees has been cancelled due to poor driving conditions caused by freezing rain.

Volleyball squad loses battle but wins war in balmy Brandon

The McGill women's volleyball team may have lost the battle for gold but they won the war, so to speak, at the Conferences of Canada Challenge tournament hosted by Brandon University, Dec. 28-31. The Martlets were swept 3-0 by Dalhousie in the tourney final but came away with victories against the two other CIS conferences that were participating at the event.

McGill mops up at Quebec Foundation gala awards

McGill took home 18 of 84 bursaries handed out at the 26th annual Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence gala, Wednesday, as a combined total of $189,750 was doled out to worthy student-athletes from nine Quebec universities. McGillians won five of the 11 major categories, sweeping both academic excellence prizes and both athletic excellence awards.

Volleyball squad salvages weekend in Rimouski with win over Sherbrooke

Kaiva Mateus, a senior from Montreal West, scored a game-high 18 points as McGill snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 triumph over Sherbrooke in a Quebec conference women's volleyball tournament at Rimouski, Sunday. The set scores were 29-27, 25-16 and 28-26 in a match that lasted an hour and 29 minutes.

CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY (#12): Three McGill teams ranked among nation's best

There are no changes this week at the top of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national rankings and three McGill squads remain in the Top 10, including women's hockey at No.1, men's hockey at No.2 and men's swimming at No.10.
