Sports in Montreal started as a feature of community activities for entertainment or competition. McGill students participated informally in many of these activities in the late 1840's and early 1850's.

McGill athletes of the year unveiled for 2011

Hockey players Alexandre Picard-Hooper of Boucherville, Que., and Cathy Chartrand, a defenceman from Lac Nominingue, Que., were named male and female athletes of the year, respectively, at the 34th annual McGill intercollegiate sports awards gala held at the Love Competition Hall, inside the Currie Gym, Thursday.

2011 CIS track & field awards announced

The CIS individual award winners for the 2010-11 track and field season were announced Thursday afternoon prior to the start of the indoor national championships that will run through Saturday at the University of Sherbrooke.

McGill wins double bronze, sets school records at CIS track championships

McGill won a pair of bronze medals, both with record-setting performances, at the CIS track and field championships, a three-day meet hosted by Université de Sherbrooke, over the weekend. Maxime Beaumont-Courteau, from the Ahuntsic region of Montreal, broke his own school record in the men's pole-vault, while a quartet of women eclipsed a 13-year-old McGill record, in the 4x800 relay.

McCuaig glitters with four gold medals at Quebec track & field championship meet

Distance runner Sarah McCuaig from Waterloo, Ont., won four gold medals to lead McGill to a second-place finish at the Quebec university track and field championships, a two-day meet hosted by Universite Laval.

Results of 16th annual McGill Team Challenge track & field meet

The University of Guelph swept both the men's and women's divisions, finishing first of 23 teams in each at the 16th annual McGill Team Challenge meet at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, the largest indoor track meet in Canada, Jan. 28-29. Nine meet records and one Fieldhouse mark fell during the two-day event, which featured more than 700 athletes.

Olympic sprinter Hank Palmer of Pierrefonds, Que., will be among a handful of national team athletes participating at the 16th annual McGill Team Challenge track and field meet this weekend at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, located in the McGill University Sports Centre at 475 Pine Avenue West.

McGill varsity teams back in gear over the holdays

A number of McGill varsity sports teams will be in action over the holidays. The only local events will be in basketball, with the Redmen suiting up for the Classique des Citadins tournament at UQAM and the Martlets playing at the Concordia-Reebok Invitational tourney. Both hockey teams will be out of town, along with the volleyball, track and swim teams.

McGill sports pantheon inducts six new members

Former Olympic swimmer Richard Pound, who went on to a lengthy administrative career with the International Olympic Committee, headlines a new cast of six inductees to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame, Thursday, bringing the list of honoured members to 101 since the pantheon opened in 1996. The induction luncheon officially kicks off the University's Homecoming Week celebrations.
