Congratulations to Afroza Sultana, McGill School of Information Studies PhD student, on her nomination as a Graphics, Animation and New Media Network of Centres of Excellence (GRAND NCE) Postgraduate Scholar.

As a GRAND scholar, Afroza will receive a stipend of $10,000 annually for three years to investigate the design of accessible touch-screen devices for older adults to support prolonged independent living.

On September 3, 2014 St-Mary's researchers unveiled a "robot-doctor" that will not only be used during explorative spatial missions, but also on Earth.  It will be used in particular to help in the rapid diagnosis and prescription of the right treatment for the astronauts in orbit. It will aslo be of significant help in, amongst other things, reducing the congestion in walk-in clinics, in developing countries as well as in the treatment of chronic diseases.

Three innovative research partnerships at McGill University have received significant long-term investments from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) partnership grants program, totaling more than $6.8 million. Each project will use novel approaches to advance knowledge and understanding on critical issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance -- from teaching computers to recognize musical symbols in images, to deepening understanding about text mining and the place of information technology within society.

Recent McGill School of Information Studies graduate Rhiannon Gainor (PhD ’14) has been awarded a 2014 Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. This prestigious honour is awarded annually to up to six recipients in an international competition by Beta Phi Mu, the International Library and Information Studies Honor Society. This marks the second time a PhD student from the School has won the award.
