Calligraphy is arguably the most venerated form of Islamic art. Over the course of this session, participants will be introduced to the traditional means of transmission, the history of the book in the Arabic and Islamic culture, and the intricacies of the Arabic script. Participants will also have the opportunity for a tour of the rare Islamic manuscripts on display in the McLennan and to interact with other manuscripts, lithographs and early printed books in the McGill Islamic Studies Library’s Octagon room.

Described as “the 20th century’s greatest romance” by their publicist Derek Taylor, the Beatles attained their phenomenal prominence within the cultural context of the turbulent 1960s, which they reflected as well as altered through their creativity and the course of their career.  This series, illustrated by recordings, live music, film clips, photos, and song lyrics, will explore their achievements and its meaning.
