Program brings together multidisciplinary teams with expertise in various areas of neurodegenerative disease

Researchers at The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) make up a large part of eight projects funded by ALS Canada and the Brain Canada Foundation as part of their 2020 Discovery Grant Program, which brings together multidisciplinary research teams with expertise in various areas of ALS and neurodegenerative diseases to investigate critical areas of disease processes and clinical care.

ALS takes away the patient’s motor functions one at a time, and the progress of finding effective drugs to counter its insidious effects has been slow. June is ALS Month, a good time to update the public on the latest developments in ALS research taking place at The Neuro.

The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) is recognized as a leading Canadian centre for research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as well as for its care of ALS patients.

Research and clinical care complement each other at The Neuro

February 28th was Rare Diseases Day, an opportunity to recognize a class of disease that is often overlooked. In the past five years, the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) has made the study and treatment of rare diseases a major priority, hiring new specialists and support staff and coordinating activity under a new research group.

$1 M gift from Mr. J. Sebastian van Berkom launches translational research into neurological disease

A patient’s very own skin cells may hold the key to new treatments and even cures for devastating neurological diseases. A generous $1 million donation from Mr. J. Sebastian van Berkom, and critical partnerships with Brain Canada, Laval University, Marigold Foundation and the FRQS-Réseau Parkinson Quebec are driving an innovative, iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cell) research platform that will transform research into Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases.
