Ms. Magdesian was frustrated. Then a researcher at McGill University’s Montreal Neurological Institute, she was having trouble with the spinal cord cells she was studying.

The only way to grow them was in a petri dish, but the cells don’t grow in a dish in the same way they grow in the human body. Instead of growing straight, they get tangled. It made her work harder, slower and more prone to error.

Lancée l’an dernier, la jeune entreprise Key2Access peut déjà compter sur une expertise variée au sein même de la famille qui l’a fondée : Sarah est étudiante en droit à McGill, Sophie est diplômée en gestion internationale et leur père, Motaz, est ingénieur. C’est lui qui a conçu le produit de l’entreprise : une application destinée à rendre les passages piétons dotés d’un bouton d’appel plus faciles à traverser pour les personnes en fauteuil roulant ou aux prises avec une déficience visuelle.

At McGill University, a new generation of entrepreneurs is sprouting up across campus, supported by the business school.

Starting this month, students from five faculties (arts, science, engineering, music, and agriculture and environmental sciences) can pursue minors in entrepreneurship, with finance, accounting, marketing and other business fundamentals taught by professors from the Desautels Faculty of Management.

As week 2 of the McGill X-1 Accelerator comes to an end, we’re happy to see our 6 teams — Appetite, Fractal, FRSH, NXTSENS Microsystems, UGo Smoothies, and Venndor — swiftly settling into their space.

Day by day, the walls and windows are increasingly covered with sticky notes of all colours shapes and sizes, every writable surface is covered with notes, and each desk has someone calling it home — for the next 8 weeks at least.

After a year of planning, over 150 start-up submissions, 137 pitches, and $117,000 in prizes, the 2016 McGill Dobson Cup has come to a close with four enthusiastic startups claiming a first place victory in four different tracks: Social Enterprise, Health Sciences, Small & Medium Enterprise, and Innovation Driven Enterprise.
