McGill grad Burnett expects Hay back for semifinal

George Burnett, an assistant coach with the Canadian national junior team, was asked on Monday about the possibility of his stepping in behind the bench on Tuesday when Canada plays Russia its semifinal game at the Scotiabank Saddledome, with head coach Don Hay and assistant Scott Walker absent with the flu.

1938 McGill Football Champions: Never to be forgotten

The day was cold and windy, the turf muddy and slippery. A brisk November afternoon in Montreal did not dissuade an eager crowd of 13,000 fans on hand to see a championship football game. The McGill Redmen had won nothing but condolences for 10 years. Now they were one victory away from claiming the 1938 title in senior intercollegiate football.

Redmen grad to receive second military decoration from Governor General

MONTREAL - Maj. Derek Prohar, a former McGill football and hockey player from Avonlea, Sask., is among 44 soldiers who will be awarded a Meritorious Service Medal. The announcement was made by David Johnston, the governor general of Canada, last week.

Five Martlet grads start in CWHL game, Sunday

The Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, featured a rare photo opportunity for five former members of the McGill Martlets as each of them were among the official starting six in a win against Burlington, Sunday. Standing at attention for the national anthem were defencemen Catherine Ward and Carly Hill, along with forwards Vanessa Davidson, Rebecca Martindale and Alyssa Cecere.

McGill grad Burnett collects 500th win in OHL coaching ranks

George Burnett, a McGill graduate who was the first member of the hockey Redmen to earn all-Canadian honours, earned his 500th career victory as a head coach in the Ontario Hockey League, Friday.

Rowing team christens six new boats at downtown campus ceremony

No champagne bottles were harmed when the McGill Rowing team held a boat christening on lower campus Saturday, Sept. 17. “If these were our old wooden boats the champagne bottle would have definitely lost,” said Philip Hedrei, head coach of the team. “But these new boats are too fragile for that,” he laughed.

Uttley appointed as 20th head coach in McGill football history

Clint Uttley has been appointed head coach of the McGill University football team. The 38-year-old native of Orillia, Ont., who is the 20th bench boss in school history, had handled the team on an interim basis for the final three games of the recently completed season after Sonny Wolfe stepped down last month.

Chicago Cubs appoint former McGill baseball player as asst. to GM

The Chicago Cubs have named former McGill University baseball player Shiraz Rehman of Blauvelt N.Y., as the club's assistant to the general manager. A 1999 graduate of McGill, he earned a bachelor's degree in commerce, majoring in finance and accounting and was a starting infielder on the Redmen baseball team for four years.

Raymond enjoying wild ride

Martin Raymond, a 44-year-old Pierrefonds native, is in his second season in the National Hockey League as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, working again alongside head coach Guy Boucher, who had been the head coach in Hamilton.

OBIT: Dr. Alan Mann was 87

A memorial service was held on October 21 for Dr. Alan Mann, who captained the McGill football team in 1946 and passed away on October 16, 2011 at his home in Town of Mount Royal, Que. He was 87.

McGill football coach Wolfe steps down

Sonny Wolfe is stepping down as head coach of the McGill University football team. The 68-year-old native of Montreal was scheduled to retire at season's end but has decided to move up his date of departure. Clint Uttley, the team's full-time defensive coordinator, will take over as interim head coach.

McGill rowing club to christen seven new boats on Saturday

The McGill University Rowing Club will be christening seven recently-purchased boats in a ceremony to be held Saturday (Sept. 17) at 11 a.m. on the lower campus. Among the team's alumni expected for the ceremony are Canadian Olympians Doug Vandor and Henry Hering and Henry Hering, as well as Robert Baxter, a founder of the modern-day club, which was rejuvenated back in 1976.

McGill mentor Nobes to serve as guest coach at Red Wings camp

McGill Redmen bench boss Kelly Nobes has been invited to attend the Detroit Red Wings training camp in Traverse City, Mich., Sept. 16-18. Nobes received the invitation from Detroit head coach Mike Babcock, a former McGill all-star defenceman, who skated for the team from 1983 to 1987.
