2011-12 McGill intercollegiate sports recap

The McGill varsity sports program had one of their most successful campaigns in 2011-12, capturing seven league championships and qualifying a single-season school record 18 of their 28 teams to compete in various national championships.

Kings Kompon becomes 14th McGill hockey grad to win Stanley Cup

When Los Angeles defeated New Jersey 6-1 on Monday to win the Stanley Cup, Kings assistant coach Jamie Kompon became the 14th former McGill University hockey player to capture the Cup and only the fourth to do so as a coach. Kompon follows in the coaching footsteps of other McGill hockey greats Mike Babcock and the legendary Patrick brothers, Frank and Lester.

McGill rowing grads 4th and 7th at World Cup regatta in Lucerne

Doug Vandor, a Canadian Olympian who began his rowing career more than a decade ago with the novice crew at McGill University, finished fourth in the lightweight men's double at the Samsung World Rowing Cup competition in Lucerne, Sunday. It marked the second straight year that Vandor just missed the podium at the Swiss regatta.

ADVISORY: re. Quebec's tuition increase and protests

Despite on-going student protests about rising tuition fees, please be advised that McGill will start the fall semester on Sept. 4, 2012, as scheduled. McGill has designed special provisions to ensure that most of the affected CEGEP students - presently estimated to be about 330 individuals - should be able to begin the fall term on time.

Kompon becomes fourth Redmen grad to coach in Stanley Cup finals

When the Los Angeles Kings eliminated Phoenix 4-3 in overtime Tuesday, it paved the way for a fourth former McGill University hockey player to coach in the Stanley Cup finals. Kings assistant coach Jamie Kompon, a 45-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ont., follows in the footsteps of other Redmen McGill hockey grads, Mike Babcock and the legendary Patrick brothers -- Frank and Lester.

McGill explores possible move to OUA football league in 2013

McGill University has applied to play in the Ontario University Athletics football conference, which, if accepted, would move the Redmen from the Quebec league to Ontario by 2013, the team’s 133rd season on the gridiron.

Former McGill footballers stresses proper nutrition in address to students in Welland

Matt Nichol addressed student athletes about proper training and conditioning during a Tuesday visit to Lakeshore Catholic High School. Nichol, who was invited to speak at Lakeshore by vice-prinicipal Andrew Boon, his one-time teammate on the McGill University football team, said supplements sometimes are necessary.

Redmen honour seniors as trophy winners announced at 33rd annual hockey awards gala

Marc-André Dorion, an all-Canadian defenceman, was presented with the Dr. Bobby Bell Trophy as the team MVP at the 33rd annual Friends of McGill Hockey awards gala at La Brasserie Molson, Friday. Other trophies were presented to forwards Maxime Langelier-Parent (Molson Cup; most three-star selections), Nicolas Biniek (most improved player) and Marc-Olivier Vachon (rookie of the year).

Two McGill grads golden as Canadian women win world championship

Two McGill grads have golden medals around their necks, thanks to Caroline Ouellette, who scored her second goal of the game 1:50 into overtime as Canada won the IIHF women's world hockey championship with a 5-4 victory over the U.S. before 4,000 at the University of Vermont's Gutterson Fieldhouse Saturday.

Million dollar gift to McGill makes sporting history

David and Sheryl Kerr, both Montreal natives who now reside in Toronto, have bestowed a $1 million gift to the McGill University women's hockey team. It is the largest single donation to a women's sports program in Canadian university history.

McGill grad Boucher to coach with Team Canada at world championships

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Guy Boucher has accepted an offer to serve as an assistant coach with Team Canada at the IIHF men's hockey world championship, slated to be held in both Helsinki and Stockholm, May 4-20. Rounding out the coaching staff is head bench boss Brent Sutter, who parted ways with the Calgary Flames this week and assistant Kirk Muller of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Babcock inspires Verreault-Paul and Redmen to victory over Gee-Gees

Francis Verreault-Paul, an All-Canadian senior from Mashteuiatsh, Que., scored twice - including the game-winner - and added an assist as No.1-ranked McGill skated to an easy 7-2 triumph over visiting Ottawa in OUA men's hockey before 390, including Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock, at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

McGill grad to receive Military Decoration from Governor General, Thursday

David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will present a Meritorious Service Medal on Thursday to Major Derek Prohar, a McGill University graduate from Avonlea, Sask., who played hockey and football at McGill. The presentation ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m., in Rideau Hall.

Babcock shows his alma maters

It was billed as "An evening with Mike Babcock" and it didn't disappoint. Making a rare trip to Montreal to play the Canadiens, the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings gave a passionate speech about never forgetting your roots, before more than 250 McGill graduates in a fabulous alumni event at the Bell Centre, Tuesday.
