NHL players poised to participate at Redmen Summer Hockey tourney, Saturday

The impending National Hockey League lockout has been a boon to the fourth annual Redmen Summer 4-on-4 Hockey Tournament. A dozen players affiliated with NHL teams have signed up to take part in the one-day event on Saturday (Aug. 25) at McConnell Arena on the campus of McGill University.

Hockey Redmen receive CIS national championship rings

The McGill University men's hockey team, which captured their first-ever CIS national title in March, finally received their much-awaited championship rings in a ceremony held at McConnell Arena's Alumni Lounge, Tuesday.

OLYMPICS: Recap of McGill's performances at the London Games

Jo-Annie Fortin, a 21-year-old psychology freshman at McGill University, finished fourth with the Canadian synchronized swim squad in the team routine final at the Olympics, Friday. Fortin, a Montrealer, had the best finish of the six McGillians that competed at the London Games. Ten other McGill grads served at the Games as coaches or administrators.

Three McGill seniors selected in CWHL draft

Three seniors from the McGill University Martlets were selected in the Canadian Women's Hockey League draft on July 18. Goaltender Charline Labonté was taken in the first-round by the Montreal Stars, while forward Ann-Sophie Bettez went in the second round, also to the Stars, and centre Jordanna Peroff was a fifth-round pick by the Toronto Furies.

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Future McGill star and NHL player Johnny Peirson was born

Johnny Peirson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 21, 1925. After playing one season of hockey for the McGill University Redmen in 1945-46, he made the jump to the American Hockey League and a short time later, moved up the ladder to the NHL, where he had an extended playing career - 11 seasons - with the Boston Bruins from 1946 to 1958.

McGill grad Kompon appointed to coaching staff of NHL's Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks appointed Jamie Kompon as an assistant coach, Tuesday. The 45-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ont., is a McGill University graduate, who previously served as captain of the McGill Redmen and later coached the team.

McGill grad garners gold as Canada doubles USA to win world inline hockey championship

The Canadian women's senior inline hockey team had a McGill flavour when it defeated the United States 4-2 on Saturday, to claim gold at the 11th annual world championship of the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports, a nine-team tournament in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

2012 HALL OF FAME PROFILE: Aldo Braccio

Soccer goalkeeper Aldo Braccio is among five new additions announced recently for induction to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame. A four-time all-Canadian, he was the starting goalkeeper for five seasons at McGill, from 1982 to 1986, posting a stellar 47-1-6 record with nine shutouts and a stingy 0.50 goals-against average in 54 regular season games.
