On May 29, myCourses, McGill’s learning management system, will be upgraded to be responsive for a consistent user experience across computers, tablets, and mobile devices.

Below are screenshots of the new look and feel from a computer and mobile device for both the instructor and student views.

The changes are primarily cosmetic and will not impact functionality. This includes: 

  • A new, simplified experience that will be more consistent across all types of devices;

If you ride the inter-campus shuttle bus, you have to check out the Shuttle Bus Tracker. It's a mobile-friendly website that uses Google Maps to show the location and speed of each bus along its route.

So simple to use -- just point your browser to http://shuttle.mcgill.ca. Click the colorful icons to see how fast the nearest bus is approaching.

This year the tracker has been updated for greater reliability and more precise data.

City of Montreal construction in the area of the Leacock building is causing noise disruptions in some classes. The University has addressed this matter with the City, but there are few options available to alleviate the issue. McGill is working to relocate classes where possible and has moved most mid-term exams. On a positive note, the City has agreed to a moratorium on construction during the final exam period.

Update, November 30: The issue reported below has been resolved.

We are currently experiencing an issue in which any Excel files downloaded from the Mercury system are not opening automatically through Microsoft Excel on Windows PCs.

Upgrade to TurningPoint Cloud: Web-based Polling at McGill

Teaching and Learning Services is excited to announce that McGill will be making Turning Point Cloud available to all students and instructors as of the Fall 2016 semester. Turning Point Cloud is a web-based polling (student response) system that allows students to respond to questions from a personal device (smartphone, tablet, laptop) rather than a physical handheld clicker. Please note that physical clickers will no longer be supported for in-class uses.

The Arthur and Dawn Weston Fellowship in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education was established by Arthur and Dawn Weston to recognize and promote the development of university teaching and learning expertise in various disciplines. It is awarded by the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office upon the recommendation of Teaching and Learning Services to an outstanding full-time graduate student interested in conducting research on university teaching and learning in any Faculty.

Value and tenure: Varies; renewable once at the Master’s level, twice at the Doctoral level.

Mathematica, from Wolfram Research, is a powerful computational software used for mathematical modeling and data visualization.  McGill IT Services has been providing Mathematica to Faculty & Staff, and in computer labs across the University for the past few years.  Now it is also available to students via the McGill Software site (www.mcgill.ca/software).

McGill faculty and staff members now have FREE access to Office 365 ProPlus, which includes the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Office apps.

The service allows you to install the Office suite on up to 5 personal devices*, including PCs, Macs, and 5 iPad and Windows tablets. You can also use the Office Mobile apps on iPhone, Android  and Windows smartphones.
