Test of McGill’s emergency communications tools

McGill University has built up a wide range of communications tools to help keep you safe in an emergency. On Oct. 24, we’ll be testing McGill’s emergency notification tools. Read the information below to find out how these tests may affect you.

McGill urgent announcements on your computer

In line with the recommendations of the Jutras Report, we’re working hard to improve every our emergency communications planning. To help, on Jan. 31 we’ll launch new software called Alertus that allows us to send pop-up announcements to your computer if an urgent situation arises. People using laptops, Macs or non-ICS-supported desktops will need to install this software manually.

Website to be disrupted during Oct. 14 emergency communications test

On Thursday, Oct. 14, there will be a university-wide test of our automated notification service, "McGill | Attention!" Phase 1 of the test will occur at approximately 10:40am. Phases 2 and 3 will disrupt all traffic to the www.mcgill.ca website from approximately 9:00pm to 9:30pm.

Announcement re: security

As you might have read or heard, Bureau canadien d'investigations et d'ajustements (or CBIA), the company that is contracted to provide uniformed security personnel to McGill, has filed for bankruptcy protection. Please be assured that McGill is taking all steps that are required to maintain continuity in security services on campus at all times to safeguard our community and property.

Security announcement

Late yesterday afternoon, McGill Security Services and Montreal police were called to the basement of Burnside Hall to investigate reports of a robbery in progress by two masked individuals. As a precautionary measure, Security evacuated the building. The individuals fled the scene with some property, including personal laptop computers.

Boil water advisory lifted

The water distributed on Macdonald Campus is now safe to drink. The boil water advisory was lifted on Friday, August 14 at 5 p.m. after two consecutive days of testing revealed no presence of contaminants in the water.

Gas main emergency is over

Around noon on Tuesday, August 11, a gas main was inadvertently ruptured in the course of construction work near the corner of University and Sherbrooke Streets. The pipe was sealed within an hour and people were shortly thereafter allowed to proceed back into the affected buildings. The emergency situation is over.
