Leading the charge toward sustainability

Professor Jeffrey Bergthorson in the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been named the first Panda Faculty Scholar in Sustainable Engineering and Design at the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED). Also recently appointed Associate Director of TISED, Prof Bergthorson began a 3-year term in both roles on January 1, 2015.

A place in the top 10

Research led by Prof François Barthelat in the Department of Mechanical Engineering earned a spot on Quebec's list of top 10 scientific discoveries in 2014. Inspired by natural structures like seashells, Barthelat and his team developed a technique to strengthen glass. They were able to make glass 200 times more resistant to breakage by engraving micro-cracks in wavy configurations on its surface. The pattern of micro-cracks guided larger cracks and absorbed impact energy.

Dr. Ann C. Macaulay CM MD FCFP, steps down as Director of Participatory Research at McGill

I want to take this opportunity to honour and thank Ann C. Macaulay, CM MD FCFP, who was the founding Director of Participatory Research at McGill, for her decades of service and commitment to primary care and community health.  I am delighted that Ann continues on in our Department as Professor of Family Medicine and that we will continue to benefit from her mentoring, expertise, and experience. Following her medical training in the UK, Ann came to Canada in 1969 to pursue a career in family medicine.

Dr. Charo Rodriguez is named the Richard and Sylvia Cruess Faculty Scholar in Medical Education for 2013-2014

The Department of Family Medicine is proud to announce that Dr. Charo Rodriguez is the recipient of the Richard and Sylvia Cruess Faculty Scholar in Medical Education for 2013-2014. The goal of this position is to promote excellence and scholarship in medical education at McGill and at the Centre for Medical Education by providing a 1 year stipend to a faculty member in the Faculty of Medicine to pursue research and scholarly activities in medical education.

Two new FRSQ Clinical Research Scholars junior 1 in the Department of Family Medicine: Dr. Kirsten Johnson and Dr. Isabelle Vedel

Both Dr Kirsten Johnson and Dr Isabelle Vedel were awarded the FRSQ Clinical Research Scholars – Junior 1 bursary.  This four-year FRSQ Junior 1 award is extremely competitive and only those who have excellent credentials are successful.  Kirsten and Isabelle received this on their first attempt!  The Family Medicine Department now has 7 clinician-scientists and Ph.D. researchers who hold FRQS bursaries.  This is indeed a remarkable achievement.

From brain plasticity to new physics

McGill University is proud to welcome four new Banting Postdoctoral Fellows who come from as far afield as Australia and Italy to continue their studies in Montreal. Their research ranges from the study of musical improvisation from the 15th to the 18th century to working on DNA nanostructure interfaces. The Honourable Gary  Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), announced the latest recipients of Canada's most prestigious postdoctoral awards at an event held at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario earlier today.
