On November 29, 10 young singers will participate in the COC Ensemble Studio Competition, competing for cash prizes and a position in the prestigious Ensemble Studio training program for emerging artists. Pallade Musica, a Montreal-based Early Music ensemble, won the Grand Prize at the first Baroque Competition, organised by Early Music America, in New York City last night. The ensemble is made up of Tanya LaPerrière, baroque violin, Elinor Frey, baroque cello, Esteban La Rotta, lute (all three graduates of McGill) and Mylène Bélanger, harpsichord.
Two former Saskatonians have their hands on some very expensive instruments after winning them from the Canada Council for the Arts Instrument Bank. Carissa Klopoushak and Kerry Du-Wors each received a violin for a three-year term. Klopoushak, who now lives in Montreal, received an 1869 Jean-Baptiste Vuil-laume and Vuillaume model bow worth $212,000. It was her first time auditioning for competition and the timing was just right for her to apply. "I'm in a good place where an instrument like that would really make a boost, make a difference to me," she said Tuesday.
Canadian Journal of Music Festschrift issue entitled "Contemplating Caplin" featuring Prof. William Caplin
The most recent issue of the journal intersections: Canadian Journal of Music (vol. 31, no. 1, 2010) has been designated a Festschrift issue entitled "Contemplating Caplin". It contains three articles devoted to the theories of musical form developed by William Caplin, who offers a response to each article. An additional article by McGill alumnus James S. MacKay also deals with issues of musical form.
The Schulich School of Music and the Department of Early Music congratulate recent graduate Mark Edwards, MMus organ & harpsichord, 2011, who has just won First Prize at the Bruges Harpsichord Competition.
Jordan de Souza,has been named director of the Ottawa Choral Society. An alumnus of the Schulich School of Music, he was also course lecturer here in the 2011/12 academic year. Mr. de Souza has been broadcast on the CBC and through the European Broadcasting Union in over 20 countries.
Schulich School of Music Alumni Shalom Bard (Mmus distinction 2010) named the new Resident Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the New Music Director of the Toronto Youth Symphony Orchestra. He won the final auditions for these important positions in May, 2012.
Schulich School of Music of McGill University Composition Students and Alumni dominate at the 2012 Socan Foundation Awards for Young Composers
The John Weinzweig award for best overall work was presented to a former Schulich School of Music student (Zosha di Castri) in a tie and of the 15 composers named, 10 are current or former Schulich students. A total of 17 citations were given, and of these, 12 were awarded to current or former Schulich students. 2 of the cited Schulich composers received awards in two separate categories.
Vincent Lauzer, recorder, M.Mus 2012, won the Canadian Music Competition's top prize (known in English as Stepping Stones and in French as 'Tremplin') on Sunday, June 10th. With it comes a $10,000 cash award, a residency at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts, a performance with orchestra in Toronto on July 6th, 2012 at the CMC Gala Concert and a duo recording produced by Radio-Canada.
Christopher Whitley (Class of 2012, BMus/Outstanding Achievement in Violin Performance/Graduating with Distinction) has been awarded this year's Peter Mendell Award. (2,500$ plus a recital).
Alumni Bass-Baritone Philippe Sly, student of Sanford Sylvan and winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions has won first prize at the Montreal International Music Competition. The competition gala concert is at 7:30 on Friday, June 8 at Montreal's Symphony Hall with the OSM.
