Schulich School of Music scholars among winners of Digging into Data Challenge

An international team of scholars led by Julie Cumming, Associate Dean of McGill’s Schulich School of Music, is among the winners of the second Digging into Data Challenge, a competition to promote innovative humanities and social-science research using large-scale data analysis.

Gordon Bintner sings his way to the top prize at the 72nd edition of the OSM Standard Life competition

Gordon Bintner (a student of Sanford Sylvan), a bass-baritone, sang his way to the top prize at the 72nd edition of the OSM Standard Life competition which earned him a $10,000 scholarship when he won the voice category. As the grand-prize winner, he receives another $10,000 scholarship. He is also to receive several opportunities to perform and showcase his winning talents.

Schulich's King Earns Another Grammy Nomination

McGill Professor Richard King has been nominated in the 54th Annual Grammy Awards for his work on GLAZUNOV:COMPLETE CONCERTOS (Richard King, engineer (José Serebrier, Alexey Serov, Wen-Sinn Yang, Alexander Romanovsky, Rachel Barton Pine, Marc Chisson & Russian National Orchestra) [Warner Classics]. The Award Ceremony will be held on February 8, 2012.

HAUSER ET MAHLER : Étonnement Complet

Nouveau record d'occupation, de part et d'autre de la rampe, hier soir à l'Orchestre symphonique des étudiants de McGill. Sur la scène remplie jusqu'à déborder, ils étaient plus d'une centaine, avec leurs instruments, pour la gigantesque Troisième de Mahler, tant et si bien qu'il fallut poster au milieu de la salle, parmi les spectateurs, les deux chœurs qui interviennent à la fin de l'œuvre.

Anthony Tan - Giga-Hertz Preis 2011

Anthony Tan, a Ph.D. student in the composition program (supervisors John Rea and Sean Ferguson), is one of six recepients of the Encouragement Prize during the 2011 Giga-Hertz Award for electronic music. This award comes from the ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany. Anthony Tan will be heading to Karlsruhe in November 2011 in order to receive his prize, and to begin the planning for his new composition.

Philippe Sly remporte le Prix Jeune Soliste 2012

Le chanteur lyrique canadien Philippe Sly a remporté le Prix jeune soliste 2012 des Radios francophones publiques. Le baryton-basse, qui vient de terminer son baccalauréat à l'Université McGill en chant classique, est nouvellement membre de l'ensemble lyrique du Canadian Opera Company à Toronto. En mars, il figurait parmi les cinq gagnants des Auditions 2011 de l'Opéra Métropolitain à New York.

Canadian International Organ Competition reveals intricacy of organ playing

Jens Korndörfer, a doctoral student a McGill, took home the second prize of $15,000, along with the $2,000 Liszt prize for the best interpretation of the composer's Variations on Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen. The $5,000 third prize was went to Balthasar Baumgartner and Frenchman (and now Montreal resident) Jean-Willy Kunz, D.Mus.(McGill), who took home the $4,000 Richard Bradshaw audience prize.

Yes, Alfred Brendel, retired from piano performance but not the music circuit, might be the right man to give a talk titled Does Classical Music Have to Be Entirely Serious? in Pollack Hall. The Beatty Memorial Lecture, next Saturday, is the centrepiece of a Brendel weekend at McGill's Schulich School of Music.
