Artist Diploma Piano Student Alex Soloway has been announced as the winner of this year's Classical Concerto Competition. He is a student of Prof. Ilya Poletaev and was also a winner in 2014 of the McGill Chamber Music Competition as a member of the Aeolus Trio.  Soloway has already performed in Canada, Europe, and the United States, including concerts at the Canadian Opera Company’s Four Seasons Centre in Toronto, the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in New York.

You might have held your breath, as I did, waiting for Ilya Poletaev to strike the final note of the Bach "Sarabande" encore Wednesday night at the end of his Philadelphia Chamber Music Society recital debut at the American Philosophical Society.

The 2016 edition of the OSM Manulife Competition took place last week.  This year's categories were strings and organ, for which the semi-final string rounds took place in Tanna Schulich Hall at the Schulich School of Music.  The semifinals for organ took place in the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the finals in the Maison symphonique de Montréal at the Grand-Orgue-Pierre-Béique.

On  November 2nd,  Schulich School of Music Theory Professor Peter Schubert was named the recipient of McGill University’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Learning. The award, which was given during Fall Convocation Ceremonies, recognizes sustained excellence in leadership and innovation, as well as the active integration of teaching and learning with inquiry, scholarship and research.

The three finalists chosen to compete for the Wirth Vocal Prize this year are mezzo-soprano Simone McIntosh, bass-baritone Igor Mostovoi and bass Jean-Philippe Mc Clish.  These singers, selected in an earlier-held preliminary round, will each present a thirty minute programme made up of pieces performed in a minimum of three languages and including at least one opera aria.

Robert Hasegawa, Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Area Chair for Music Theory at the Schulich School of Music, has received the 'Emerging Scholar Award' at the 2016 Society for Music Theory conference held in Vancouver.  His article “Clashing Harmonic Systems in Haas’s Blumenstück and in vain” was published in the journal Music Theory Spectrum 37/2 (Fall 2015).  The Emerging Scholar Award (Article) is given for an article published no more than seven calendar years after the author’s receipt of the Ph.D.

Cellist Joshua Morris was named the winner of the 2016-2017 Golden Violin Competition held Sunday, October 30th in Pollack Hall.  Morris, accompanied by Karsiri Laothamatas, performed  Kaddish, from 2 Mélodies hébraïques by  Maurice Ravel, a work composed by Morris himself, Suite for Solo Cello, and the  Prokofiev  Sonata for cello and piano in C major, Op. 119.

Voice professor soprano Dominique Labelle has released an album with Musica Pacifica: Mi Palpita Il Cor.  Musica Pacifica is an early music ensemble based in San Francisco  and they have built up an impressive catalog of performances concentrating primarily on the pre-Classical repertoire.
