First there’s the skirl of the pipes, then Winston Purdy’s rich baritone rolls across the audience as he sings the University anthem, Hail, Alma Mater, to mark the beginning of almost every Convocation ceremony since 1999. That musical accompaniment has been a feature of decades of processions of students, faculty and families as they walk into the Convocation tent.

The Milton String Quartet, composed of Schulich School of Music students Roman Fraser, Maithéna Gireault, Evan Robinson and Joshua Morris, has won the Grand Prize and Senior String Division Gold Medal at the 44th Annual Fischoff Competition at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

Each year the McGill Alumni Association recognizes alumni, friends, students, faculty and staff whose commitment has had a significant impact on alumni life, the University and/or the community. This year, one of our graduates, Sarah Nematallah, has received the 2017 James G. Wright Award for her work in developing the accessible, interactive Xenia Concert Series for individuals with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and their families.

Two Schulich PhD students, Bryan Martin and Mathew Boerum, received first prize and $11,000 in the category of Innovation Driven Enterprise at the McGill Dobson Cup awards ceremony held March 30, 2017. Audible Reality develops revolutionary 3D audio imaging which captures and delivers fully-immersive, life-like sound from any source.

A new publication highlighting fascinating insights gained through interviews with many Schulich professors has recently been released by the Rice University Gateway Study of Leadership program. Earlier this year Rice University students traveled to Montreal to collaborate with Interim Dean Julie Cumming, Prof. Simon Aldrich, Director of the Music Entrepreneurship Program, Doctoral student Suzu Enns.

Violinist Yolanda Bruno, BMus'11, was awarded the First Prize and the Audience Choice Prize at the inaugural Isabel Overton Bader Canadian Violin Competition, organized by the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts at Queen’s University. This national competition was open to Canadian violinists from the age of 18 to 29. While studying at the Schulich School of Music, she was a violin student of Jonathan Crow.

The Schulich School of Music Teaching Awards are a public recognition of the excellence, commitment and innovation of our faculty, part-time instructors, and graduate teaching assistants. They serve to acknowledge the importance of these qualities in the academic experience of students at McGill. Four awards will be presented at the Schulich School of Music Spring Convocation, taking place at 3:00 p.m on Wednesday, May 31st on the McGill Lower Campus.

After playing 350 concerts, recording two albums, and appearing at more than ten international music festivals, contemporary percussion ensemble Sixtrum broke new ground by paying homage to composer (and Director of the Schulich School of Music's Digital Composition Studios) composer Philippe Leroux in their newest release, De la percussion (Soupir éditions, S232).

McGill will present Montreal-born conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin with an honorary degree. The University’s highest honour will be presented to Maestro Nézet-Séguin on May 14, at 3 p.m., at the Maison symphonique de Montréal, 1600 rue Saint-Urbain.

Despite being the most-performed operatic composer in the world, there’s a surprising lack of studies written on the style of Giuseppe Verdi’s works — a problem that Prof. Steven Huebner is addressing head-on. Recently, Huebner put out the first book in any language that offers an in-depth analysis of the composer’s musical style in the context of his 23 Italian operas, from Aida to Ernani.
