Violist Marina Thibault, MMus'15, has been named a Révélation musicale 2016-2017 by Radio-Canada. While a student at the Schulich School of Music she was in the class of Prof. André Roy, and was a winner of the McGill Concerto Competition. The Révélations musicales program provides both artistic support and a performance platform for talented young artists.
Artist Diploma piano student Karl Hirzer, MMus 2015, has been named resident conductor with Calgary Philharmonic and also assistant conductor to Boris Brott at the National Academy Orchestra for the summer of 2016. Karl Hirzer is a Canadian pianist and conductor from Vancouver, BC. In May of 2015, he completed his Master’s degree in piano performance studying with Ilya Poletaev at the Schulich School of Music, where he also studied orchestral conducting with Alexis Hauser.
The Schulich School of Music is conducting an internal competition to select its candidate for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship competition.
The deadline to submit applications for institutional review is May 17, 2016.
Eligible candidates must demonstrate potential to pursue a research-intensive career in an area aligned with research interests at the Schulich School of Music and with the strategic priorities of McGill University. Candidates must have fulfilled all requirements for a PhD or PhD-equivalent degree:
Professor Stephen McAdams, Canada Research Chair in Music Perception and Cognition, is one of six outstanding Canadian researchers to be awarded a Canada Council for the Arts Killam Research Fellowship. He is the second Killam Research Fellowship recipient from the Schulich School of Music.
The Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada (SWAAC) have named graduate musicology student Laura Risk a recipient of a 2016 SWAAC Graduate Student Award of Merit. This award was established to recognize women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their university and in the community while maintaining an exemplary academic record. The award, which consists of $3000 and a plaque, will be presented on Friday, April 29th at the SWAAC annual conference.
When he retired in 2010, Lawrence Mysak, Professor Emeritus in McGill’s Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, capped an illustrious and award-winning career in science and mathematics. But his research and teaching career ran parallel to another passion. Mysak is also an active musician, and has played the flute for over two decades as a member of the I Medici di McGill Orchestra. Recently he established the Lawrence A. Mysak Prize for Woodwinds at the Schulich School of Music, an annual undergraduate award whose first recipient will be announced in 2016.
Rihab Chaieb has been awarded a First Prize at the 2016 Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition in New York. She graduated with BMus in Voice from the Schulich School of Music before becoming a member of the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble program. Currently finishing her first year at the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann program, Chaieb studied voice at Schulich with Professors Winston Purdy and Sanford Sylvan.
Viva Voce, one of Montreal's best professional choral ensembles gave its last concert on Tuesday night at Bourgie Hall. Viva Voce closed its 17th season with music by Renaissance rock star and Monteverdi role model, Cipriano De Rore. Founder and conductor Peter Schubert says he's always looking for enticing ways to program a concert, and anniversaries are sometimes helpful.
The latest edition of Circuit musiques contemporaines, Volume 26, no. 1, is devoted to the Societé de musique contemporaine de Québec's (SMCQ) Homage Series composer of the year, Professor John Rea. Rea has been celebrated by the SMCQ throughout the 2015-2016 musical season. The magazine includes articles and contributions by Jimmie LeBlanc, Maxime McKinley, Anne Marie Messier and Michel Robert, Julien Bilodeau and John Rea himself. The issue is illustrated by artist Nicholas Voeikoff-Erens.
Professor Jacqueline Leclair, Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs group, Ensemble Signal, performed a remarkable, hour-long work by Hans Abrahamsen in New York City March 24th, and received this New York Times review. Leclair teaches oboe, coaches chamber music and is also Woodwind Area Chair here at the Schulich School of Music.
Benjamin Deschamps, a Schulich School of Music Master's student has been awarded the 'Bourse de Création Jazz' by the Conseil des Arts de Montréal (CAM). The $5,000 award will be used to help fund the production of his second jazz recording. The award was announced on March 17, at the opening of the Jazz en rafale concert series. Deschamps is curently finishing his Master's degree as a student of Professor Joe Sullivan and has also studied with Professors Kevin Dean and Jean-Nicolas Trottier.
On March 21st, 2016 the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 were announced and McGill's Schulich School of Music was named the top Canadian performing arts university in the country. QS rankings highlight the world’s top universities in 42 subjects, based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. The Schulich School of Music was ranked 26th overall. Other participating Canadian institutions include University of British Columbia, University of Montreal, and University of Toronto.
Le Chœur Schulich de l'Université McGill sera en concert à la Chapelle du Musée de l'Amérique à Québec vendredi 11 mars. C'est un retour aux sources pour le directeur artistique du Chœur Schulich, Jean-Sébastien Vallée, qui vient de Québec et y a poursuivi ses études en musique.
