On Saturday, October 21, an event has been scheduled for visiting McGill alumni during Homecoming weekend. The computer and study area (former Reference area) on Level 1 (main floor) of the McLennan Library Building will not be accessible from 1 pm to 4 pm. Additional computers and group and individual study areas are available elsewhere in the McLennan and Redpath buildings, as well as in other branch libraries on campus. Books from the Reference collection will be retrieved for users by library staff during this period. Please consult with staff at the Information Desk for details. Factiva scheduled maintenance will take place on Saturday, 21 October, 20:00-22:00. Access to Global.Factiva.com, including Factiva Search 2.0, Factiva Modules, Track Folders, E-Mail (On-Demand/Continuous/Scheduled), will be unavailable during this time.
The returns chutes in the McLennan Lobby will be under renovation from October 16 to 23. We will temporarily relocate the returns chute to the window on the EDRS side of the Loans Desk in the Redpath Library Building (near the Redpath entrance). The McGill community now has access to Canadian Journal of Chemistry back to 1951 online, and to Canadian Geotechnical Journal back to 1969.
The Blackwell Synergy site is undergoing unscheduled maintenance. The site has experienced a system or database error and Blackwell technical staff are working to make the site available as soon as possible. There is no indication when the repairs will be complete.
A free-standing ornamental wall fell over and smashed a large window at the Nahum Gelber Law Library, filling a corridor with large sandstone bricks. Fortunately, no one was injured but we are concerned about another free-standing wall of the same type. At the moment, our front door and driveway have been sealed off, but we are staying open. Access can be gained through Old and New Chancellor Day Halls.
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) website (www.rsc.org) will be unavailable for up to 48 hours from 07:00 GMT [03:00 EST] on October 21 for an essential hardware upgrade. The RSC apologizes for any inconvenience that this downtime may cause.
Schulich Library of Science and Engineering now has laptop locks available at the Loans desk. These allow you to attach your laptop and secure it to a piece of furniture. Laptop locks may be borrowed for 2 days. We also have headphones available at the Loans desk (loan period 2 days).
There is a scheduled maintenance window for Factiva on Saturday, September 30. There will be no new content (sites will be available) from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST.
As of Monday, October 2, full service will be available on Levels 2 and 3 in the library. All print books and journals will be available. Access will be through Level 1 of the Barton Building. Materials placed on reserve for classes will also be available on Level 2. Computers and photocopiers will be located on Levels 2 and 3. You can return books on Level 2 at the Service Desk. Thomson Scientific technicians are working on access problems with Web of Science. The problems seem to affect only some customers. As yet there is no indication when these problems will be resolved.
