Fabien Gélinas to head Canadian Arbitration Committee

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, acting as the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Canada branch, announced a new leadership for its Arbitration Committee at a meeting held in Montreal on November 8, 2014.

Saying goodbye to Professor H. Patrick Glenn (1940-2014)

Above all, I remember his laughter and the mischievous twinkle in his eye. He would say something uniquely insightful, and immediately cover it up with a chuckle. Only later would one realize the depth of his learning, as layers upon layers of wisdom emerged from a casual conversation in the hallway.

New Faces at the Faculty for Fall 2014

The Faculty is delighted to welcome three new members of the Law community this fall: Professor Sébastien Jodoin, Anne-Sophie Hulin and Justice Louise Provost. Sébastien Jodoin (first photo) joined the Faculty as Assistant Professor on August 1st. Professor Jodoin is currently completing a PhD in environmental studies (law and public policy) at Yale, where is also a Faculty Associate of the Governance, Environment & Markets Initiative.

Hoi Kong appointed Associate Dean (Academic)

We are pleased to announce that Professor Hoi Kong has accepted to serve the Faculty as Associate Dean (Academic) for a two-year term starting September 1st, 2014. As Dean Daniel Jutras indicated, “Hoi has agreed to take on this important task as we begin a most important stage in our undergraduate program review and overhaul.  Hoi’s commitment to our students is undeniable (as attested by the John W. Durnford Award he received last year), and his creativity and rigor in thinking about pedagogy and curriculum will be precious over the course of the next two years.”

Bidding farewell to Roderick A. Macdonald (1948-2014)

A teacher, first and foremost, Roderick A. Macdonald will be remembered as one of the most important scholars and thinkers in McGill University’s history. He was a mentor and inspiration to generations of students and law professors, and a transformative force at the Faculty of Law, the University, in Canadian society, and in the broader world.

Saying ‘au revoir’ to Old Chancellor Day Hall: The Faculty of Law is moving!

Old Chancellor Day Hall, the Faculty of Law’s most iconic building, is closing at the end of June for 16 months as we undertake much-needed renovations to upgrade the building’s heating, electrical systems, plumbing, windows and more, while respecting its historical features. Faculty and staff who were in OCDH have been relocated either to New Chancellor Day Hall and 3674-3690 Peel Street, or to rented office space near McGill University’s Roddick Gates at 2001 McGill College Avenue, suite 750.

Student Ngozi Okidegbe to present at International AIDS Conference in Australia

Third year Law student Ngozi Okidegbe has been selected to present her paper, "Litigating HIV-related discrimination in Nigeria: implications of Georgina Ahamefule v. Imperial Medical Centre and Dr. Molokwu," – written under the supervision of Professor Vrinda Narain – at the 20th International AIDS Conference, which will take place July 20-25, 2014, in Melbourne, Australia.

Roderick Macdonald receives McGill University Medal

On May 28, Roderick Macdonald was awarded in absentia the McGill University Medal for Exceptional Academic Achievement, one of the University’s highest honours. Macdonald received the McGill Medal as part of the Convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Law, where he taught thousands of students over the course of a distinguished career that spanned more than three decades. Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law, accepted the Medal in Professor Macdonald’s name.

Faces of Change: Class of 2014 takes a crowdfunding approach for its class gift

The BCL/LLB graduating class is setting out to change the face of the Faculty, with a crowdfunded class gift aimed at expanding the Faculty’s photo collection. “Students today are pursuing a hugely diverse range of careers after exiting the McGill gates,” the project page explains. “We believe they present a wonderful opportunity to broaden this collection and to allow the enormously varied careers of our alums to shine.”

Ten McGill Law students head to Shantou University thanks to Li Ka Shing Foundation

Thanks to a generous donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation (Canada) to McGill University, ten students from McGill’s Faculty of Law and ten students in Shantou University’s Law School (Guangdong Province, China), will be doing a summer law program together from May 19 to 30. The program, which alternates between Montreal and Shantou, will take place in China this year.

Student Andrea Buitrago Carranza to participate at next U21 Undergrad conference

Second-year law student Andrea Buitrago Carranza has been selected to participate in the 2014 Universitas 21 Undergraduate Research Conference (URC), which will be hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, July 7 to 11. This year, the conference theme is Food Safety: From Farm to Table.

Emilie Conway to clerk at the International Court of Justice

We are happy to announce that Emilie Conway, BCL/LLB’13, has been selected by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to participate in the Court’s 2014-2015 Judicial Assistants Programme. Judicial Assistants are chosen to work directly with one judge, helping him or her in the preparation for hearings and the drafting of judgments. Ms Conway was selected to work directly with the President of the Court, Judge Peter Tomka. She will begin work in September 2014.

Law Student Éloïse Gagné receives Scarlet Key Award

The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that one of its students received a Scarlet Key Award during a pining ceremony held at McGill’s Faculty Club on March 26, 2014. Éloïse Gagné, who served as the LSA’s president in 2013-2014 and was a member of the 2013 editorial board of the McGill Law Journal, received her Scarlet Key pin from Principal Suzanne Fortier, in recognition of her efforts to help support McGill and the broader community.
