Recent changes to look & feel of Office 2013 for McGill users

If you use Microsoft Office 2013, you may have noticed a few changes this past week: Theme changes - The colors & appearance of MS Office applications are different. New warning notices when emails cannot be scanned by McGill's Antispam system

Beginning on December 12, 2013, McGill's Anti-spam system will prepend a notice to warn you when an email cannot be scanned; this is in addition to changing the Subject of the email, which is the current practice. The prepended notice will also contain a brief description of why the email could not be scanned. New Search Functionality in McGill’s Web Management System

The search functionality on McGill websites has been improved. Previously, you would have to first choose whether you wanted to search the local site or expand your search to include all McGill sites. Now you can enter your search term once at the top of the web page, and you will be presented with a single page with two tabs : one containing matches within the local site and a “McGill” tab containing matches found within all McGill sites.

IT Services enhances classroom AV support

In Fall 2013, IT Services changed its approach to providing technological support to classrooms with the goal of improving the efficacy of our service. We now are able to dispatch 25 additional technicians (21 downtown and 4 at Macdonald campus), from 10 different locations (as opposed to one location on the downtown campus), to provide live assistance when the problem is not solvable through a telephone consultation.

Antivirus Software Update: Trend Titanium Internet Security 2014

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2014 is now available for Windows and Mac, for home use. This antivirus software is provided by McGill, free for full-time students, faculty and staff to install on their personal computers. Change to Application/Renewal for McGill Username & Email for Affiliates process

In the past, non-McGill Staff who needed to access McGill IT Services had to print out a .pdf or .rtf form (Application/Renewal for McGill Username Credentials) and then email, fax, or mail it to IT Services.  This paper form has been replaced with an online form, Application/Renewal for McGill Username & Email for affiliates. The form must be filled out by a McGill employee who is acting as sponsor for the affiliate.  For more information, see:

McGill email: .zip attachments containing .exe files will be quarantined

Due to the continued threat of Cryptolocker and other similar malware infecting computers on campus, all email messages containing .zip attachments with an executable (.exe) file will be flagged as spam and quarantined by the Anti-Spam Service. Emails that are quarantined are not delivered to your Inbox.
