IT Security Awareness - Focus on Phishing

McGill IT Services has developed an online course to provide our community with guidance and resources to remain vigilant and resilient in the face of IT security threats. The first module of this course focuses on "phishing", the term used to describe various schemes used to lure unsuspecting people into divulging their personal information. You’ll learn ways to recognize phishing emails and how to identify fraudulent website addresses.

Heartbleed vulnerability

You may have become aware, through media or other means, of a computer security vulnerability called Heartbleed that is affecting networks around the world. This bug, which has existed since late 2011 but was only widely recognized this week, makes password and other sensitive data vulnerable to theft.

Wireless certificate change - Friday, April 11 at 7am

The wireless certificate used by McGill University will be changed on Friday, April 11th at 7:00 am. The majority of devices should automatically re-authenticate to the wireless network and should not experience any loss of connectivity. If you are presented with a certificate (or Windows Security) warning when connecting to McGill's wireless networks after the change, do one of the following:

myCourses: minor update scheduled for April 30

A minor update will be applied to myCourses on April 30 from 12:00 am to 8:00 am. This update will build on the stability of the learning environment and add a few new features for both instructors and students, ranging from the ability to drag-and-drop files directly into the list of content, to replying inline within discussions.

UPDATE - April 10 - 10:30 am: Outlook 2013 client email and Lync issues

UPDATE - April 10, 2014 - 10:30 am: A fix continues to be worked on. In the meantime if you are one of the affected users, you should continue to use Outlook Web App (http://exchange.mcgill.ca) for your email, calendar and Lync services.

Battery recall on Lenovo Thinkpad laptops from 2010-11

On March 27, 2014, Lenovo voluntarily recalled certain lithium-ion batteries, which were manufactured for use with ThinkPad notebook computers that shipped worldwide between October 2010 and April 2011.

Resolved: myCourses experiencing intermittent problems

Update - March 14, 3:00 pmThe problems reported yesterday with accessing and navigating myCourses and uploading files, have been resolved. The system seems to be stable now but continues to be monitored by the vendor. Initial announcements:The myCourses Learning Management System, is currently experiencing intermittent network problems. Some users may not be able to access the system or navigation may be slow. myCourses is currently experiencing a problem uploading files.

Centerstage issue when editing documents using the plugin

If you are editing documents using the plugin in CenterStage, you may get a plugin timeout when you try to upload the latest version. The workaround is to close all browsers, then login to CenterStage and import the latest version of the documents from your computer (they should be located under C:\Users\yourusername\Documentum\Checkout).
