Building for life

Life is about to be explored in revolutionary new ways at McGill. The University is set to construct an innovative life sciences building that will change the way research is conducted. Built at a total cost of $53.1 million, the Francesco Bellini Life Sciences Building will be the centrepiece of the largest research complex of its kind in Eastern Canada and will be one of the biggest construction projects undertaken in McGill's history.

Sir John Maddox to speak at McGill on the future of science

Several years after his retirement as editor of the British scientific journal Nature, Sir John Maddox remains active as a speaker and writer on his favourite topic: the exciting road ahead for scientists. On March 19, Maddox will deliver the Beatty Memorial Lecture at McGill University (6 pm in the Fieldhouse Auditorium, Leacock 132). Maddox was at the helm of one of the world's most prestigious scientific publications for almost 23 years, helping shape science by deciding what to publish.

Quebec makes big investment in McGill's Redpath Museum

Canada's oldest public natural history museum has received an important injection of funds from Quebec's Ministère de la Culture et des Communications. McGill's Redpath Museum has been awarded $560,000 in grants, which will be used to help renovate the 19th-century landmark and to create a permanent exhibit on the geological history and biological diversity of Quebec.

Repeated human papillomavirus infection, a reliable predictor of cervical cancer precursor lesions

In their article entitled "Persistent Human Papillomavirus Infection as a Predictor of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia" published in the December 26, 2001, issue of JAMA, Dr Franco and his colleagues explain how the results of their study "show a strong relationship between persistent HPV infection and SIL incidence particularly for HPV types 16/18."

From vision to reality

Ground will be officially broken for innovative teaching facilities at McGill on Monday, December 17. Pauline Marois, Quebec's Deputy Premier and Finance Minister, will be present at a press conference and groundbreaking ceremony to announce the Government of Quebec's multi-million contribution towards the construction of McGill's new Lorne M. Trottier Building. Named after engineering alumnus Lorne M. Trottier, the new facilities are being constructed at a total cost of $17 million, the new teaching facilities will be built to enable McGill to meet the surging demand for information technology and engineering professionals across North America.

Research team uncovers protein-folding mechanism

In the September 28 issue of Molecular Cell, researchers at the NRC Biotechnology Research Institute and McGill University explain how they decoded the structure of calnexin. Calnexin was discovered in 1991 by McGill Professor John Bergeron and then-BRI researcher Dr David Y. Thomas.
