With spring finally here and warmer temperatures just around the corner, snow will slowly melt away, releasing us from the clutches of winter. However, that’s not the only thing that the melting snow will release. Researchers from McGill University and École de technologie supérieure in Montreal have found that urban snow accumulates a toxic cocktail from car emissions - pollutants that are in turn unleashed into the environment as the weather warms up.
Prof. Sylvain Coulombe received the Outstanding Reviewer Award 2016 for Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. [pdf]
Prof. Lawrence Chen has agreed to serve as the first Academic Lead of the eLATE (enhancing learning and teaching in Engineering) initiative. Prof. Chen will work in collaboration with academic staff and the Pedagogical Coordinator towards meeting the initiative’s objectives, bringing the perspective of a faculty member. Professor Chen is one of our Faculty’s leaders in teaching and learning improvement, and has a growing record of advancing the state of education in our Faculty by implementing new teaching methodologies in FACC courses as well as undergraduate and graduate ECSE courses.
Emeritus Professor JH Vera published a new book:
Classical Thermodynamics of Fluid Systems: Principles and Applications.
Prof. Viviane Yargeau has been promoted to the rank of Full Professor. Congratulations!
On Saturday, November 26 from 3am to 5pm, Facilities will be performing renovation work that will affect temperatures in the Schulich Library of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Engineering. The steam distribution system in the Macdonald-Stewart Library Building (Schulich Library) will be shut down in order to fix six leaks before the winter season sets in. As a result, library users may experience colder than normal temperatures. Spaces will be open for study but users should dress accordingly.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The Gas Dynamics of Explosions, by Mechanical Engineering Professor John H.S. Lee, will be available from Cambridge University Press in July 2016. The book is based on Prof Lee's course in shock dynamics and focuses on the analytical methods used to determine non-steady shock propagation.
Prof. Alejandro D. Rey has been re-appointed as James McGill Professor, May 2016. Congratulation.
The research group of Prof Xinyu Liu is developing a portable, paper-based biosensor for point-of-care diagnosis of HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infections. The research, led by graduate student Chen Zhao, has been published in the journal Biomicrofluidics. The article has been selected as an Editor’s Pick of the journal and has been featured by Science Daily, American Institute of Physics (AIP), the Electrochemical Society and other science news websites.
