On Friday March 10^th, the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) hosted the 2023 Minds in Motion (MIM) conference, open to undergraduate and graduate students completing research in the field of KPE. For the first time, the MIM conference was open to students from McGill and from neighbouring universities around Canada, welcoming attendees from the University of Toronto, Queen’s University, Université de Montréal, Université Laval, McMaster University, Trent University and l’Institut national de santé publique du Québec

Lying turns out to be a very teenage thing to do, as most parents learn."Lying peaks in adolescence and then declines all through adulthood and into the senior years," says Victoria Talwar, professor of developmental psychology at McGill University and author of The Truth About Lying: Teaching Honesty to Children at Every Age and Stage (APA LifeTools, 2022).

Tina Montreuil, ECP, was recently featured on Global News and Times Colonist outlining how parents can talk honestly with their children about traumatic events, such as the case of a bus crashing into a daycare.

“Parents need to prepare for these discussions and listen instead of being reactive. With any tragedy or anything that elicits a reaction of distress or sorrow, we want to be sure that we’re available, we’re listening, because we need to validate and create space for them.”

The Rideau Hall Foundation (RHF) is at the beginning stages of work to support dramatically increasing the numbers of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis teachers by 10,000 and to promote the systemic changes necessary in leading to more sustainable Indigenous teacher employment opportunities in all areas of the country. Made possible through generous philanthropic support by the Mastercard Foundation, the RHF will be investing in excess of $45 million towards innovative community-driven approaches to achieving these objectives.

Three scholars from the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology were represented the recently published lists of Top-Producing Women in Educational Psychology Journals from 2017 to 2021 (Griffin et al., 2023, Educational Psychology Review). Krista R. Muis, Professor, Kristy A. Robinson, Assistant Professor, and Nikki G. Lobczowski, Assistant Professor, each received recognition for their publication records in flagship educational psychology journals.

Teacher turned mission-driven entrepreneur, Philip Cutler (B.Ed.'13), was featured in interview with two media outlets this past week. As CEO of Paper, Philip used his transferable skills as a classroom teacher to establish an on-demand online tutoring service. Paper has supported 3,000,000 students throughout the United States and will be collaborating with McGill Education on research in the EdTech field. Philip is also a member of McGill Education's Faculty Advisory Board (FAB), as a philanthropic ambassador for the Faculty.

For professional athletes, the pressures of competition and stigma surrounding mental health issues can be debilitating to the point where some are leaving the arena for good. Young hockey players are no exception. Fear of negative career repercussions can mean athletes avoid disclosing their mental health concerns.
