Montreal Gazette article on Faculty of Dentistry’s mentoring program

"MONTREAL — A mentoring program for students in the faculty of dentistry at McGill University has been launched by Dr. Norman M. Miller, a 1974 graduate of the school. The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation matched his funding, and the result is a six-figure gift that provides the seeds of an endowment fund for the nascent program." Read more here

C.P. Leblond - Stem Cell Renewal Theory

Over 60 years ago, Yves Clermont and Charles Leblond characterized the steps of sperm differentiation in the testis. This enabled them to identify for the first time the population of spermatogonia responsible for the production of spermatozoa. We celebrate 60 years later the publication of their landmark paper and their discovery. Read more

Dean Allison member of a new ODQ Committee on Access to Oral Healthcare

Following extensive discussions with stakeholders in the field of dentistry, the Order decided to create a Committee on Access to Oral Healthcare. The committee will hold vast, province-wide consultations on questions related to access to oral healthcare, conduct an in-depth analysis of the situation and suggest concrete, fact-based solutions. It will present its findings in April 2014, to mark Oral Health Month.

Betty Hoac, PhD student (supervisor Dr. Marc McKee, co-supervisor Dr. Monzur Murshed) wins 2-year FRQS studentship for her research on regulation of mineralization in bones and teeth. David Wright, Postdoctoral Fellow (co-supervised by Dr. Mary Ellen Macdonald and Dr. Jennifer Fishman) wins 2-year FRQS fellowship for his research on ethical issues in end-of-life care to better understand nursing practice with patients who desire death.

Dean Allison receives Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was created in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Medal honours Her Majesty for her service to Canada and serves to recognize Canadians who have made significant contributions to Canadian society. Read more here.

Dr. Jocelyne Feine receives IADR Distinguished Service Award

Last week, Dr. Jocelyne Feine was honoured with IADR’s Distinguished Service Award in Seattle, WA. The award is presented to an individual member of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) for outstanding instances of service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. It is intended to recognize members who have not served as officers of the IADR official. Read the official press release here.

Dr. Marc McKee: Gains made towards treatment of rare bone disease

Elusive substrate protein identified in the most common form of heritable rickets Diagnosed in toddlers, X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is the most common form of heritable rickets, in which soft bones bend and deform, and tooth abscesses develop because infections penetrate soft teeth that are not properly calcified.  Researchers at McGill University and the Federal University of Sao Paulo have identified that osteopontin, a major bone and tooth substrate protein, plays a role in XLH. Their discovery may pave the way to effectively treating this rare disease.

Dr. Laura Stone: Chronic pain alters DNA marking in the brain

The team led by Prof. Laura Stone, a professor at the Faculty of Dentistry and the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain, and Prof. Moshe Szyf, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, have discovered a mechanism that embeds the memory of an injury in the way the DNA is marked in the brain by a chemical coating called methyl groups or DNA methylation.

Board approves Dr. Paul Allison's Decanal re-appointment

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum and Provost Anthony C. Masi are pleased to report that at its meeting of February 12, 2013, the University’s Board of Governors approved the following appointment. Prof. Paul Allison has been reappointed, effective June 1, 2013, to a second five-year term as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry.

Graduate student Akanksha Srivastava featured in the Feb/March 2013 edition of the Journal de l’Ordre des dentistes du Québec

Graduate student Akanksha Srivastava is featured in the February/March 2013 edition of the Journal de l’Ordre des dentistes du Québec. Last November 9th, during the Journée scientifique annuelle du Réseau de recherche en santé buccodentaire et osseuse (RSBO), Akanksha Srivastava was presented with an award by the Académie dentaire du Québec for her poster presentation on her research project titled: "Willingness to pay for mandibular two-implant overdentures: a social perspective," supervised by Dr. Jocelyne Feine and Dr. Shahrokh Esfandiari.

Professor Marc McKee leads group receiving $3.7M for a new cryo-electron microscope

Professors Marc McKee (as lead investigator), Jake Barralet and Maryam Tabrizian, along with Hojatollah Vali as Director of the Facility for Electron Microscopy Research (FEMR) and six others, have received funding for a new cryo-focused ion beam scanning electron microscope.  This nanotechnology instrument allows artifact-free sectioning of essentially any hard or soft material ‒ particularly frozen biological cells and tissues including bones and teeth ‒ for correlative microscopies and 3D ultrastructural and molecular reconstructions.
