Message to all staff and all students from Line Thibault, Acting Secretary-General

A message from Principal Heather Munroe-Blum Dear members of the McGill community, I will be holding a webcast at 4 p.m. on April 19, 2012 to answer questions from members of the McGill community. I invite you to join me. If you can’t watch the webcast live, it will be recorded and made available on the blog as soon as possible.

As more details come to light on the bombing and shootings that killed 76 people in Norway on Friday, some members of the McGill community may be concerned about loved ones, friends or colleagues who may have been affected by this tragedy. We’d like to offer our support by reminding McGill students and staff about the various services available to them:

McGill's Public Affairs department is looking for feedback on the effectiveness with which the University communicates with faculty and staff members. The information will be used to review and refresh internal communications to serve the McGill community more effectively.

Professor Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University, is delighted to announce that the Board of Governors has approved the reappointment of Prof. Christopher P. Manfredi as Dean of Arts for a second five-year term. The reappointment is effective July 1, 2011.

This is an update of a message sent on April 22. Please read it carefully. The assailant Montreal police have been seeking following incidents of assault and sexual assault that occurred in the Milton-Parc community to the east of the downtown campus between Thursday, April 21, and Friday, April 22, is still at large.

McGill will be participating in the 5th annual Earth Hour on Saturday, March 26, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. by turning off some lights on campus for the weekend, beginning on Friday afternoon. We invite you to do your part before going home on Friday by shutting off or unplugging office computer equipment, lights and other non-essential electrical appliances to conserve energy.

Given the article in this week’s Tribune and other media reports about a McGill student’s posts to Twitter that contained disturbing and threatening messages, I want to reassure the McGill community that the University takes such incidents extremely seriously.

The extent of devastation and loss of life from the enormous earthquake that struck Japan Friday morning (eastern time) may not be known for a number of days.

Given the severity of the earthquake in New Zealand, many members of our McGill family may be concerned about loved ones, friends or colleagues who may have been affected by this disaster.

McGill continues to closely monitor the situation in Indonesia after a 7.7 earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit the city of Padang and nearby Mentawai Islands. Many members of our McGill family may be fearful for loved ones, friends or colleagues who may have been caught in these devastating circumstances.

On Thursday, Oct. 14, there will be a university-wide test of our automated notification service, "McGill | Attention!" Phase 1 of the test will occur at approximately 10:40am. Phases 2 and 3 will disrupt all traffic to the www.mcgill.ca website from approximately 9:00pm to 9:30pm.

A rabid bat was found lying on the sidewalk at McGill’s Roddick Gates on Friday, September 10th 2010 around noon. Rabies is a viral infection that can be transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. In the case of a bat, this bite can be very small and may go unnoticed.
