Wall Street Journal, Ottawa Citizen - Schulich student Philippe Sly wins Met Opera audition

Published: 13 March 2011

Eight promising young singers, chosen from nearly 1,500 who entered district and regional competitions, got a chance to perform from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera on Sunday afternoon. The contestants, all in their 20s, were three sopranos, a baritone, a bass and three bass-baritones. Curiously, there was not a tenor in the bunch, nor any mezzo-sopranos, for that matter…

Philippe Sly, 22-year-old singer from Ottawa was one of five winners of the prestigious annual competition for singers between the ages of 20 and 30. Sly sang arias by Handel and Wagner during Sunday’s Grand Finals Concert, which was hosted by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and featured eight finalists…

While Sly couldn’t be reached on Sunday evening, when speaking to the Citizen before the finals, the fourth-year student at McGill University’s School of Music, said he was thrilled.
