Vert & Or leave soccer Martlets feeling black and blue
SHERBROOKE -- The Sherbooke Vert & Or exploded for three first half goals to upend the visiting McGill Martlets 3-0 in an RSEQ women's soccer semifinal, Friday.
Josée Bélanger, a member of the Canadian national team, tallied twice, sandwiched around a goal by Chloé Belhumeur-Limoges.
"We played our worst first half of the season," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "We came flat, with no energy and did not defend well at all in the last third. We could not connect together in our passing game and also in winning tackles and anticipating runs. We were punished by a team that was there to win on both sides of the field.
Sherbrooke netminder Elena Waldispuehl was credited with eight saves for the shutout, while McGill 'keeper Victoria Muccilli kicked aside six of nine shots and took the loss.
"Our second half was stronger, however, as we outplayed Sherbrooke and created many chances but we has poor finishing, nothing went our way," added Mounicot. "We tried hard to win the second half, the desire and urgency was there but not the execution in front of the net. We have to regroup and prepare the best way we can bouce back from this performance."
Sherbrooke advances to the league championship game against the division-leading Montreal Carabins, Sunday at 11 a.m., while the Martlets will lick their wounded pride and focus on preparing for next week's CIS national championship, which they will host at Molson Stadium, Nov. 10-13. The Martlets have four practices left before their first game at the CIS tournament and will either play Trinity Western or Alberta, in the sudden-death quarter-final on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
