Verreault-Paul honoured as CIS athlete of the week

Published: 28 March 2012

OTTAWA - Francis Verreault-Paul, a hockey player from McGill University, is the CIS male athlete of the week for the period ending March 25, 2012. It marks the final selection of the 2011-12 season. He also won the OUA Pioneer weekly award and the McGill - Ye Olde Orchard Pub weekly honour.

Verreault-Paul is the third McGill athlete to be selected at the CIS level this season, joining hockey players Ann-Sophie Bettez and Leslie Oles, who earned the CIS weekly honour on Jan. 18 and Nov. 23, respectively.

A psychology senior from Mashteuiatsh, Que., Verreault-Paul received the Major W.J. 'Danny' McLeod Award as the most valuable player of the 50th CIS men's hockey championship after he helped the Redmen claim the first University Cup title in program history. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound forward tallied five points, including three goals, in three contests during the national tournament held in Fredericton and was named McGill player of the game following the Redmen's two pool-play match-ups against Moncton and Saskatchewan. The 24-year-old, who led the OUA in the regular season with 21 goals in only 23 games, picked up an assist in Sunday's gold medal final, a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against Western.

Ryan Holfeld, a hockey player from Saskatchewan, was also in the running.
