Verreault-Paul and Bettez named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL - Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., and Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the meet for the period ending Feb. 14, 2010.

 

Verreault-Paul, a 5-foot-10, 178-pound forward with the Redmen hockey team, tallied 10 points in the final three games of the regular season to capture the OUA scoring championship by one point. The 22-year-old management sophomore posted back-to-back four-point games to finish the season with a league-leading 25 goals and 54 points in 27 contests. After registering a goal and one assist in a 4-3 overtime loss to UQTR on Feb. 8, he scored once and added three helpers in a 4-3 overtime win at Concordia on Friday, then netted a hat-trick and added another assist in a 9-0 win over Ottawa, Saturday. Prior to joining the Redmen last fall, he played five seasons in the QMJHL with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, while attending College de Chicoutimi.

 

Bettez, a 5-foot-4 forward with the hockey Martlets, scored five of McGill's seven goals in two weekend victories that allowed the Martlets to extend their record win streak to 78 consecutive games. The 22-year-old management junior registered a hat-trick in Saturday's 4-1 home-ice victory over Ottawa and added a pair, including the winning tally in Sunday's 3-0 conquest at Concordia The all-Canadian winger has a 20-7-27 record in only 16 games and ranks third in the nation in goals scored. Bettez, who was named CIS rookie of the year in 2007-08, previously played for Dawson College.
