VanSlyke, Davidson named athletes of the week

Published: 19 October 2009

MONTREAL - Jeremy VanSlyke of Fredericton, N.B., and Vanessa Davidson of Kirkland, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 18, 2009.

VanSlyke, a 5-foot-7, 131-pound coxswain with the McGill rowing club, guided the Redmen coxed four to a gold medal at the 45th annual Head of the Charles regatta last Saturday. McGill finished first of 55 boats entered in the Club Fours category, completing the three-mile course in 17:19.146, more than four seconds ahead of second-place Notre Dame. Races on this difficult course are won primarily based on the coxie's performance in guiding the boat. VanSlyke, a 20-year-old music junior, enjoys performing a wide variety of piano and violin music including classical, jazz and Celtic. Prior to enrolling at McGill, he attended Fredericton high school.

Davidson, a 24-year-old centre with the hockey Martlets, scored four points in McGill's 5-0 victory over Ottawa last Friday. The victory extended the team's win streak to 56 consecutive games against CIS opponents. Davidson, the team captain and a 5-foot-8 physical education senior, had three goals and one assist. She is a product of John Abbott College and enrolled at McGill in 2005.
