U.S.-Canada exchange: McGill to benefit from prestigious Fulbright program In support of up-and-coming scholars as well as seasoned researchers

This year, as part of the world-renowned Fulbright program - an educational movement based on the principle of scholarly exchange between the United States and various countries from around the world - one McGill University student will study and conduct research in the U.S., while three American scholars and four American students will visit McGill.

Ms. Deborah Lightman, a McGill Master's student in Environmental Studies and Urban Planning, has been awarded a traditional Fulbright student award. She will spend a year conducting research on the processes in environmental policymaking, with a focus on collaborative management of natural resources at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In addition, McGill is pleased to welcome a large contingent of American Award recipients.

The four American recipients of Traditional Fulbright Student awards are:

  • Jeffrey Hilgert, a PhD student from Cornell University who will study labour policies in Canada;
  • James Kruse, Alma College, will study the management of stakeholder interactions in Canadian environmental policymaking;
  • Jane Martin, University of Michigan, will study French-Canadian heritage in America;
  • Victoria Shaw, Hanover College, will study the paleolimnology, history and environmental policy in relation to Lake Memphremagog.

The three visiting American scholars are:

  • Dr. Thomas Carbonneau, Pennsylvania State University, will take up the Fulbright Visiting Chair in Comparative Law and Legal Pluralism;
  • Dr. Michael Galbreth, University of South Carolina, has been named the Fulbright Enders Visiting Research Chair in Canada-U.S. Relations;
  • Dr. Karen Kedrowski, Winthrop University, has been awarded the position of Fulbright Visiting Chair in Health, Indigenous Populations, Media and Education.

By engaging our brightest minds in academic exchanges, the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program seeks to enhance mutual understanding between Canada and the United States. Through its bilateral academic exchanges, outstanding students, scholars and professionals strengthen Canada-U.S. relations by examining a wide range of subjects critical to the relationship between the two countries.

Operating in more than 150 countries worldwide, the Fulbright program has long been regarded as the world's premiere academic exchange. With the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and the United States Department of State, the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program is the gold standard for academic exchanges and intellectual opportunity.
