Published: 8 February 2010

MONTREAL - Matt Thornhill of Ile-Bizard, Que., and Katherine Lepage of Whitby, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 7, 2010.

Thornhill, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard with the men's basketball team, scored 40 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in two weekend victories. He shot an impressive 58.3 per cent from the floor (14/24), including a 55.6 success rate from three-point range (5/9). He also shot a stellar 87.5 from the free-throw line (7/8) and was credited with four steals and a pair of assists. The finance senior scored 25 points in a 77-69 road win at Concordia last Friday, then celebrated his 24th birthday with 15 points as McGill upset first-place UQAM 93-63 on Sunday.  Thornhill joined the Redmen in 2006 out of Dawson College.

Lepage, a 19-year-old biochemistry sophomore, won a pair of gold medals and helped McGill to capture the Canadian University Synchronized Swim League championship for the sixth consecutive year. She was part of McGill's winning White team, which edged out second-place Calgary by 0.67 points and received the John Drake trophy for best team routine. Lepage also paired up with Savannah Forrester to capture the duet routine with a score of 79.5, six points ahead of second-place Western Ontario. Lepage, who serves as co-president of the synchro team, was the club's rookie of the year last season after graduating from All Saints Catholic high school in Whitby.
